Land agitation at Ballycannon 1908 to 1910

Post by matthewmacnamara » Thu Apr 21, 2016 11:14 am

A sustained campaign was carried on in the Ballycannon district during 1908, 1909 and 1910 for the acquisition and distribution by the Land Commission,
of land owned first by the Shine estate, and then by J. Delmege of Castlepark. During that time a branch of the United Irish League was formed in the area. The east Clare M.P. Willy Redmond was a strong supporter of the agitation and raised the matter more than once in the House of Commons.
Mr Delmege sold the land in question to the War Office for a rifle range that was eventually established.
The local men opposed this disposal of the land.
On the other hand the Limerick city Irish Party M.P Mr Joyce [same party as Willy Redmond] strongly supported the project on economic grounds
and mobilized considerable support from city commercial interests for it.
The leading figure in the agitation was a Mr O'Hartigan.
At one point the Ballycannon U.I.L. branch complained of a lack of support forthcoming from neighbouring Meelick.
