The McMahon Archival Collection of Landed Estates in Clare

Post by s1nead » Tue Dec 29, 2015 6:38 am

Last summer, there was an exhibition of The McMahon Archival Collection at the Clare Museum at Ennis.

This collection of previously unseen archival material relating to more than 60 families and landed estates in County Clare was donated to the National Archives in the 1970s and subsequently re-accessioned by Clare County Council’s Archives’ Service in 2010.

It is one of the largest collections of primary source documents in Clare County Council’s Archives’ repository, containing over 1,100 files spanning over three centuries.

Here is a link to the Brochure published for the Exhibition of the Collection:

Here is a descriptive list of the contents of the Collection and the families involved:

Imagine my surprise when I discovered my grandfather's estate among the holdings!

In one of the promotional announcements for the exhibition is written:

"..........if members of the public wish to access material they should contact the Archivist, Rene Franklin at archivesrecords@clarecoco.ie ....."

Is my understanding correct in that Ms Franklyn, the Archivist, might help me by sending copies of my grandfather's file?

I am very excited by that prospect but I have sent her several emails and I have also emailed the Clare County Archives with no reply.

Are they ignoring my request? Have I misunderstood what I read in the announcement?

Any suggestions about how I might get in touch with Ms Franklyn?

Thank you in advance!

The contact details for the Clare County Archive are at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/archiv ... act_us.htm so you could give her a call at Tel: 00 353 65 684 6414 or 00 353 65 684 6269.

Susan,

I understand your eagerness, but this is Christmas ! I suggest waiting until mid-January to do another email. I today tried reaching someone in a professional capacity in Limerick and was informed that she is out until Jan. 5th.

Hi Susan

By all means contact the Archivist, but perhaps you might bear in mind that she is basically a 'one-man-band' and may not be in a position to provide the service that you would like. I don't know what her procedures are, and it's always worth asking, but such services are stretched very thinly here in Ireland at the moment.

Good luck with your searches

Lucille

Just wanted to post an update on this post of mine.

Ms Rene Franklyn was SO very helpful!

She uploaded my grandfather's records to a CD for us and even facilitated my FOI form to access other records.

She has ignored my requests about compensating her office for their patient assistance .... I even offered to send a donation to the Archives.

Shouldn't we send something for their time & effort?

Just wanted to send her a "Shout Out".

Susan
