Can't find GG Grandfather's Drumcliffe Cemetery grave 1870

Post by s1nead » Sat Dec 12, 2015 7:22 am

I just found the obituary of my great great grandfather, John Harnett Milward, who died in 1870.

He had been the Manager of the National Bank at Ennis for many years.

From the Obituary, I learned he was interred in Drumcliffe Burial Ground.

According to their website, the Clare Roots Cemetery has finished transcribing the gravestones in the Old Drumcliffe Cemetery (Thank you very much!!)

The photos and the gravestone information are available on the Clare Library website at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... _ennis.htm .

I did a search for him there but John H Milward is not listed in their database.

Does that mean his gravestone is too decayed to have been identified?

Have I reached a dead end?

Does anyone know, at this point, how I should proceed?

I have a feeling that most of the Milward family might be buried near him ...... wouldn't THAT be an awesome find!!

Don't these cemeteries have an office or a registry where records are kept on who is buried in their cemetery and where they are?

I've included a copy of the obituary ....

Thank you for reading!

The family of a John Milward and Ellon O'Brien appears in the baptism register of the Ennis Church Records at http://www.ennisparish.com/genealogy/
The baptisms of eight children between 1853 and 1866 are listed.
I notice that John Hartnet Millward is in the Slater's Directory of 1870 http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... s_1870.htm
Hope this helps

Further to this I did a quick search on Trove and came up with the following items:
This first one appeared in the Geelong Advertiser of 11 Oct 1859
It was difficult to read but since it was short I did a quick transcript

(Lower left corner of page)

Missing Friends
If Mr. Freeman H. Milward, late of Ennis
Ireland, would send his address to Dennis Guerin,
Derwent Hotel, Batesford, Geelong, he will much oblige, as
his brother J.H. Milward, Esq.,Manager National Bank of
Ireland, Ennis, would like to hear from him.

This second article from the Freeman's Journal June 1867 briefly mentions the arrest of John Milward following a Fenian gathering in Ennis in March 1867. Make of it what you will.

Hello again, Murf!

You have no idea how helpful were those leads!

The only information I had for Freeman H Milward were his birth & baptism dates.

Now, I might be able to trace his life in Australia!

As for John Milward - he was born in Ireland in 1848 ...... But had emigrated to America in about 1867....

Could he have been running from the Law after that arrest??

Very interesting, don't you think!!

Thanks again!
