Sexton Miltown Malbay

Post by Kev Football » Sun Nov 29, 2015 9:02 pm

My great grandfather came from Milltown Malbay. He was born in the 1840's and married Bedelia/Bridget/Delia Carrol in the late 1860's? They married in Ennistymon and had at least one daughter who was born in Miltown. Louisa Sexton born 1872. George worked as an excise officer and was later transferred to Galway, then Wicklow and finally Dundalk. Altogether they had 12 children, although I can only find details of 10.
Louisa born 1872 Co Clare
Robert 1874 Co Galway, presumably died before 1879
Mary Ann 1875 Co Galway
Dr George Joseph 1876 Co Wicklow. My grandfather
Robert Patrick 1879 Co Louth. Boxed under the name of "Pat Clancy"in South Africa
Vincent John 1885 Co Louth
Maud Elizabeth 1886 Co Louth
Joseph 1888 Co Louth
Martin 1891 Co Louth
Agnes Elizabeth 1892 Co Louth
Has anyone any ideas about George's siblings or parents.

Hi Kev

There is a George Sexton listed in the 1839 Miltown Malbay census which has been discussed on this forum -

Go to the latest posting on this topic to get the current url for the census. It has both the original and a transcription.

You will find George's marriage to Bridget Carroll on 21st January 1872 on the Church records on the National Library of Ireland site
http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls0 ... 7/mode/1up

Written on the left are some hieroglyphs which I think can be translated as Miltown - this was the parish of Kilfarboy, with Miltown Malbay one of the towns in it, but MM is also in the Registration district of Ennistymon.

If you are feeling brave go to the Baptisms in Kilfarboy on the NLI site and you may be able to find George and his siblings. If it was the right family in the 1839 census then some of the them should appear on the baptism register which begins in 1831. I said 'brave' because the writing is terrible!

Good luck

Lucille

Thank you for the help from you all.... After further delving I think I am a little further on.

From the 1839 census of Miltown Malbay:
Breaghfa West
James SEXTON (Head)
Betty KELLY Wife
Pat SEXTON Child
Martin SEXTON Child
James SEXTON Child

George Sexton March 25th 1848
http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls0 ... 7/mode/1up
His parents were listed as James Sexton and Eliza Kelly.
Traditionally the family says they are from Spanish Point and this Townland seems to tie in with that.

Congratulations on persevering with those Kilfarboy records. Now you can find the baptism's of George's siblings ... and their marriages ... and their children ... and soon you will have lots of extra Christmas cards to send!!

Good luck
