County Clare school registers on LDS microfilm

Post by Paddy Casey » Sun Aug 23, 2015 11:12 am

Several Clare school registers have been microfilmed by the Church of the Latter Day Saints (aka Mormons, LDS). The microfilms of the Clare schools are listed at https://familysearch.org/films/lookup/p ... lm=2356251. You can order them to be sent to your local LDS Family History centre to peruse them.

The school registers are, in a sense, valuable surrogate censuses. They contain lots of information about the pupils, including their marks at the end of each year. Some of the entries record pupils' transfers from other schools from which one can make tentative conclusions about the movements and/or circumstances of their families.

The registers are legible in many or most cases. It takes a little while to work out the arrangement of the individual schools on the reel of film and spooling back and forth between the film index and the school of interest is a bit of a slog but, heck, it's made available free of charge so whining would be churlish.

I went through the Clare schools and attach a list of them with some remarks about the quality and legibility of the images.
