Post-Truce Damage to Property (1923) Clare files now online

The National Archives of Ireland (NAI) has added more Post-Truce (Damage to Property (Compensation) Act 1923) files to its online catalogue. They now include entries from County Clare. The files deal with claims for compensation for loss of or damage to property that occurred as a result of military action between July 1921 and March 1923. The catalogue entries record the claimant's name and address and a brief explanation of the incident that led to the loss of their property, which is also briefly described. If you find an entry of interest, the files can be accessed at the NAI in Bishop Street, Dublin 8.

Go to http://www.nationalarchives.ie/search-the-archives/ and enter FIN/COMP/2/3 into the Simple Search box to find the Clare entries. To page forward through the entries (20 per page) use the paging facility at the top of the page, not that at the bottom. The one at the bottom takes you into a document tree rather than the next page of individual name entries.

Forum members may find family names in there (there's a Christopher Gallery, for example) but a browse of the names and their claims also offers interesting insight into the history of the County during that era.
