Hi Fran,

Here is another clue from the Irish World (NY) newspaper of July 30, 1898 (genealogybank newspaper archive):

ALABAMA
_________
MOBILE. - in the chapel of the Convent
of Mercy, July 9, Miss Mary Redmond, in
religion Sister Mary Ignatius, Miss Kate Gilroy,
in religion Sister Mary Evangeline, and Miss
Annie Nugent
in religion Sister Mary Winifred,
received the white veil of the Order of
Mercy from Rev. C.T. O'Callaghan, D.D.,
vicar general and assisted by Rev. F. Joseph, S.J.

You'll want to contact the centralized U.S. archives for the Sisters of Mercy to obtain more information on where Sister Mary Winifred served. Mobile was the regional headquarters for the Sisters of Mercy after moving from New Orleans, so she could have been in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana etc. If you get more information where she was located and then summarize on this forum, I should be able to track down more newspapers articles. Sister Mary Winifred was surprisingly a very common name for a nun.

On the Clare Forum several years back was a fellow looking for information on his Nugent family from Corrakyle. A 35 page local history written by Martin Nugent of Gortaderra townland was posted. Was this Martin Nugent the younger brother or nephew of Sister Mary Winifred? He writes on page 9 that "Martin Nugent has at present 1978 living descendants scattered over Ireland, Britain, United States of America, Canada, Australia and Rhodesia."

I found a reference to a Martin Nugent in the Irish American Weekly of 1881 but this was related to the Corrakyle Nugents so will respond to that post.

hi

The Mercy Archives here in Dublin are incredibly helpful info@mercyarchives.ie and keep record of Mercy nuns who went to the states. They helped me out with my own family

I suggest getting onto them

Margaret

The three nuns Sister Mary Ignatius, Sister Mary Evangeline, and Sister Mary Winifred who took their vows in Mobile, Alabama in 1898, are all living at a convent in Pensacola, Florida in the 1900 census:

The Sisters of Mercy in Pensacola taught at St Michael's School adjacent to the convent as well as at the nearby St. Joseph School for the Creole, and St. Joseph School for the Colored which they operated.

Fran,

There are still Nugents in Gurtaderra. Below is link to Archbishop Eugene Nugent, b 1958 in Gortaderra. He is currently Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti.

Good luck with your search.
