6 sons of Michael Frawley that served in WWI

Hi all,
New to the forum. The eldest son of my ancestor Thomas Frawley (b.1822 d.1882abt h/o Mary Markham 1825-1901), by the name of MICHAEL FRAWLEY stayed in Ireland while the rest of his brothers and sisters emigrated to Australia. He was living in Kyleatunna (I think) on the family land that had been passed to him from Thomas, with his wife Bridget O'Rourke for a time. Then they sold the land to Michael Neyland and moved into Upper Turn Pike in Ennis. Among his 11 kids (I think), he had six sons that served in WW1 with the British army I guess. Two died. Patrick was killed on Anzac Day April 25 1915 trying to get off the River Clyde that had been run aground on the beach at Cape Helles under the muzzles of four Turkish machine guns. Another, Peter, had died at the first battle of Ypres on Oct 20, 1914. The mystery is the other four and the whereabouts of their descendants in present-day Ennis. I am sketchy on the names due to incomplete war records of Irishmen that served in the British army BUT I think they MAYBE were John, James, Martin, and William. They might have had a daughter Mary also.
Any help would be appreciated. Also, I do have a LOT on the Frawleys that emigrated to Qld in the 1850-60s.
cheers

Hi
This may be your family in the 1901 Census
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... e/1070106/
Play around with the Frawley name in Ennis in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses, both free
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
It won't give you the living relatives but it will bring you along. If you want to go back, the Clare Library site has a wealth of material.

The eircom phonebook online
http://www.eircomphonebook.ie/ names several Frawleys in Ennis
Good luck

There was quite a crowd of Frawleys in Kilmaley Parish (14 occupants in Griffiths Valuation). I have an ancestor also by the name of Michael Frawley(1805-1885), from Lehaknock townland, who married Sarah Cammel(1815-1902). I don't know if any of their family emmigrated, but if you think I may be able to assist with identifying some of your migrant Frawleys then send me a PM.
Cheers, Murf

Are you sure they were in the British army ? When trying to track my great-uncle Thomas Casey who was said to have died in WW1 I spent a lot of time searching British army records and then discovered that he had emigrated to Australia, enlisted there, and died in France in 1918. I've summarised the story at
http://www.clareroots.org/Thomas%20Casey-28%20b1878/ The Australian Department of Defence and an archive in Canada provided me with a staggering amount of detail on his military career and demise. You might like to check out that angle even if the four have descendants in present-day Ennis (one or more could have gone to Australia or New Zealand or Canada, fought in WW1, and then returned to The Sod to procreate).

Actually this data source at naa recordsearch is one that I hadn't fully explored before from the point of view of checking out Clare servicemen.
Inserting the search words Clare Ireland with the dates 1914 to 1918 turns up 109 Clare born servicemen who enlisted in Australia.
A similar search during WWII turns up another 50 odd.

I donated the records on the attached link back in 2007 but somehow missed the record of John Frawley from Ennis.

For those interested in the Irish in Australia / New Zealand in WW1 this entry on Claire Santry's blog would be relevant

For anyone who is not familiar with this blog - it's well worth following, especially but not exclusively, if you're in Ireland.

Yesterday I received a mail from the National Archives of Australia announcing that "......Mapping our Anzacs is no longer available online. However, you can find all of the content, and a lot more, on the new
Discovering Anzacs, a joint Anzac Centenary project by the National Archives of Australia and Archives New Zealand. We encourage you to register on Discovering Anzacs to continue to discover our Anzac history".
That database is at
http://discoveringanzacs.naa.gov.au/ It shows the original enlistment forms. An excellent source.

Hi Bundyson,
Are you a descendant of Michael Frawley ? These Frawley's from Kyleatunna are also my direct ancestors. Michael's youngest brother Patrick (born 1866) is my great-grandfather. Just wanting to get in touch with you to discuss our ancestry.
Regards Geoff
