Denis/Donat White (1885-1967) can anyone help?

Post by lylaquinn » Thu Sep 25, 2014 11:21 am

Hi there,

I am researching my great grandfather, as we have his war medal but know very little about him.

He was born in 1885, in Scariff, and named Denis. He married Winifred Sheedy in 1913.

He played a part in securing the County Championship for Hurling in 1907 and went to war in 1915, where he was wounded. He changed his name to Donat at around this time - perhaps for political reasons - another mystery I would love to solve.

I am trying to get as much information as possible on Denis/Donat. I would love any information anyone has, or if anyone can tell me where to look, I would be very grateful.

My dream would be to have a picture of him.

Many thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for any replies.

It is possible that he liked to use an Irish name - Irish for Denis is Donnacha - and the Irish for Daniel is Donal - so maybe DONAL was easier to understand.
