LEC Rental of the Life Estate of F. N. Keane Esq.

Post by pwaldron » Wed Sep 24, 2014 5:29 pm

Several regular members of this forum will be interested in the rental of the Keane Estate which was sold by auction in the Landed Estates Court on 2 Mar 1866. Thomas Pilkington, assignee, must have been Francis Nathaniel Keane's nephew of that name. Marcus Keane, petitioner, was his infamous brother.

The lands involved included Scattery Island, Gower Hall, the Clare Journal premises in Jail-street, Ennis, etc.

Scattery was held by Keane under a lease from his brother-in-law William Cooper Marrett, dated Christmas Eve 1830. He had sublet it to various tenants, all named, some by leases dated 3 Apr 1844, 10 Jun 1845, etc., others from year to year.

Gower Hall was held by Keane under a lease from his namesake Francis Nathaniel Burton, dated 28 Aug 1827, formerly occupied by Keane, but for some years past tenanted from year to year by the parish priest of Kilmacaduan [sic] (i.e. Fr Michael Quinlivan, who was in the parish from 1858 to 1869).

The Jail-street premises was held by Keane under a lease from Francis Gore dated 18 May 1827.

Those with access will find the full rental as 10 separate jpg files at
