bribes to landlords' agents in pre-Famine and Famine time

Post by matthewmacnamara » Sun Jun 29, 2014 5:41 pm

In evidence given to an 1844 parliamentary commission of enquiry, Mr Daniel Cullen a prosperous merchant from
Thomondgate in Limerick refers to the practice of bribing landlords' agents in order to secure holdings.
He had taken farms in the Meelick and Parteen area.
An editorial in the Limerick and Clare Examiner of 1849 refers to the same practice.
Would anyone know of other documented references to the practice?

yes on the same lines but not exactly similar. In the early 1800s my gt gt gt grandfather Edmond Kenny and his sons acted as land agents for the Synges around Corofin and also West Clare. (mount Callan area) They sublet lands and relet them to tenants. At one point George Synge put an ad in the papers saying he supported them (search for Synge in this doc to get the reference).

I don't know was it always bribery. In this case the agents were taking the land on long leases themselves (which were cheaper) and subletting it on shorter lets at much higher rates.

However corruption was rife, the presentment system was riddled with it and there are also accusations of bribery over the elections
