Herberts in Ennistymon

Post by kimsalisbury » Fri Mar 21, 2014 5:18 am

My ggg grandmother was Mary Anne Herbert, born in 1821, in Ennistymon. She was the daughter of John Herbert. I don't know where her father was from or who her mother was (although I think her first name was Margaret). I have found mentions of John Herbert in the minutes of the Poor Law Union meetings in the 1840s. Any information about the origins of the Herberts would be greatly apreciated
All the best,
Kim Salisbury

That's a great photo, Michael. My great, great, great grandmother - Mary Ann Carrigg (nee Herbert) was still living in Bogberry Street in the 1901 census.
Many thanks,
Kim

hello kim,
enhanced photo of bogberry street date 1899.
there is a possibility that the large house in the bottom of the photo is the carrige house.
my g /grand mother is Mary oloughlin at no 26 in the 1901 census of bogberry street.
also extract from book on the history of the ennistymon bridge club 1954.

Hi Michael,
Thank you so much for that. Which newspaper was it from? That is fantastic - the earliest record I have of the Carriggs in Ennistymon so far.

Thanks so much for that photo, Michael. It's such a shame it is going to be demolished. So glad that you have got a photo of it at least.
Many thanks,
Kim

It seems the Carriggs carried on the distillery business over in the States. My gggrandmother,Ella Carrigg Clark, ran a bootlegging operation during prohibition. She was known to have wayward young ladies living with her as well!

message from michael oloughlin hello blondie,
carrigs bar ennistymon,
were known known to add a drop of water to the drink [local saying a drop of holy water}
there is a local folk song on water being added in carrigs bar,
i wonder if your ggg grand mother carried on the same tradition.
regards mick oloughlin
