Eagan/Egan of Co Clare

Post by Eagans2012 » Sun Mar 02, 2014 4:50 pm

Hello, my ancestor was John Eagan. We have reason to believe he immigrated to the US in 1839 per "John's" story that he emigrated at age 17 (b.1822) from County Clare. Below is the only passenger list we have ever found with a John Eagan matching his year of birth. There are no family stories passed down concerning John's parents or siblings, exact location in Ireland.

We pick John up in 1850 in Ohio. He possibly also lived in Pennsylvania prior to Ohio. Some possible names he might be connected with here in the US are the surnames Bell, Ashley, Kearns, Sharp. In the US censuses prior to 1850, only the head of the household were listed with everyone else tick marks only, so census do not help finding John from 1839-1850.

John married twice. He had 2 children (Catherine who died in infancy & Charles) with wife Jane Sharp who died in 1855 Ohio. He had 4 children (Mary Ellen, Isabelle, Jennie and William) with second wife Mary J Bell-Bears who died in 1870 - Indiana. John lived to the age of 91 and died in Indiana.

Occupation in US: He may have briefly been a farm laborer. Most of his life he was listed as stonemason, brick mason and worked with his brother-in-law in his brick making business.

Ancestry.com Passenger List for 23 May 1839 aboard Powhatan
Lists John (17-abt 1822), Jane (13-abt 1826), and John Eagan (11-abt 1828) sailing from Liverpool England to New York City, New York. There is a Keeman Eagan also on board age 24 (1814) at the top of the list. Nothing listed as to Place of origin, destination, Race/Ethnicity/Nationality. John is listed as a Laborer.

My Goal: Someone will read this who may also be looking for Eagan/Egan's and help us in our journey to locate who John's family was in Ireland. Thanks.
