King/Kelly

Post by James Sullivan » Wed Feb 12, 2014 7:35 pm

I have been trying to find the birth record of my Grandfather John Kelly born c 1874. I believe possibly in Co Clare or Co Limerick. His father was Timothy Kelly and his mother was Alice King. I have found a birth record of a Margaret Kelly in 1874, father Timothy Kelly mother Alice King, she could be his sister.
This birth was registered in Bridgetown, in the union of Limerick in Co Clare. The family were Roman Catholic. The dwelling place of father is given as Kyle.
My grandfather moved to Glasgow and married my grandmother Mary Catherine King in 1900, she had lived in Limerick City in St Michaels parish prior to moving to Glasgow. I would appreciate any advice on where I should search now. I thought it likely that my grandparents probably met in Limerick.

James, you neglected to mention the Rank or Profession of Father shown on Margaret's birth certificate.

There was no Kelly in Kyle in Griffith's Valuation (1852) or the 1901 census:

Kyle is a thinly populated townland of 307a 3r 36p:

Margaret is the only child of Timothy Kelly and Alice King whose birth was registered in Ireland between 1864 and 1880 according to the extracts in Ireland Births and Baptisms at familysearch.org:
https://familysearch.org/search/collect ... id=1584963
The marriage of Timothy Kelly and Alice King does not appear to have been registered in Ireland.

It seems likely that Timothy Kelly was involved in a profession which involved moving about. He may have brought his young family to Scotland.

You should check the baptismal register for Broadford parish for any children who may have been baptised but not registered with the civil authorities.
