Patrick Spellissy eviction Kilrush July 1888

Post by edoshaugh » Thu Feb 06, 2014 1:54 am

Are there descendants of Pat Spellissy who read this forum? Pat and his family were evicted from their home on the Vandeleur estate in July 1888. They were photographed outside immediately after eviction with their possessions piled up next to them.

My great grandfather, an American visitor from New York City, was present. His parents were from Clare, prior to emigration.

If you are an ancestor, and know of the famous photo please contact me.

Hello Ed - a few years ago I remember seeing a photo of the Spellissy family standing by a railway carriage - with their possessions piled high - I think it said 'Ballyerra' - which is just outside Kilrush - - but Census of 1901 shows the family a bit further out at Ballykett - - I have looked at the photos on Clare Library and cannot find it - there are other photos with your relations - esp. at Moyasta. Perhaps if you wrote to the editor at The Clare Champion newspaper, Barrack St., Ennis, Co.Clare - he might locate the photo. Miriam.
