Telegraphing Irish - seeking help on a reference or two

Post by kvnptrck11 » Mon Jan 27, 2014 12:13 am

Hello everyone,

I have an article (see below) of my great great grandfather, John Halpin, attending an "Irish festival" that "lasted a week" in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal. This article was published world-wide, but in seemingly random papers/journals around the beginning of 1899. If you read the article, it states that there were also several speeches on the revival of the Irish language that were published "the next day" in the Freeman's Journal in "Galic characters" or "Gaelic characters", depending on which specific article you read. I found somewhere that there was a play or two performed in Irish around early or mid November 1898. Basically, I am looking for when this festival took place so that I can hopefully find the Freeman's Journal that the article made reference to. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That sounds like the correct festival, thank you! This looks to be a poem about the author's fear of losing the Irish language, which would certainly be appropriate for the described festival. Good find!

Many people gave their names in Irish in the 1911 census in order to assert their right to do so, but I’ve noticed that some people who were very committed to the preservation of the Irish language, including some writers in Irish, did not give their names in Irish in 1911. This John Halpin, from Co. Clare, was clearly proud of his ability to speak Irish: in the 1901 census he writes “Irish Speaker” along with “Postal Clerk” in the column for occupation: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000348182/. In 1911, he gives his name in English again (this time he is living in Rushfield Ave., Ormeau DED, Co. Down): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 002173117/)

I am interested in John Halpin and would like to know where in Co. Clare he comes from. I thought I would find his father’s name in the record of his marriage, which took place before 1876 (see topic “Question regarding education occupations”: http://www.ourlibrary.ca/phpbb2/viewtop ... f=1&t=5385), but failed to find that marriage. We know that his wife’s name was Annie Melville - her mother was living with them in 1901.
