Venerable Mrs. McMahon nee Cooney 1785

Post by smcarberry » Sun May 24, 2009 5:16 pm

I am going to double-check the newspaper edition which contains the obituary of Mrs. Catherine McMahon, as her birth
year is stated as 1785 and the year of the newspaper story is 1903. Nonetheless this was obviously a woman who lived
through a lot. Her parents were Daniel Cooney and Mariah Flannegan. Her husband was Michael McMahon who died in 1839,
so she managed the family's farming until 1853 when she came to the U.S. with her children. At the time of her death she
resided in Greencastle, Indiana (about 25 SW of Indianapolis) with her married daughter Mary Arkins. (All these surnames
sound like NE Clare). The article also mentions her sons. Her brothers were Martin who died in 1873 and James, both of
whom lived in Dubuque, Iowa.

A good story for a rainy day.
