Clare materials in National Archives, Dublin

Post by smcarberry » Thu May 14, 2009 1:23 pm

I am showing below a modified version of my March 2005 posting to the Rootsweb Clare mailing list, discussing a March 2004 trip to the National Archives in Dublin, when I consulted the Archives book that indexes Irish governmental records, both those lost in the Dublin fire of 1922 and those still in existence. The book is clear on which is which, although there are no explanations or further descriptions given. My experience is that items indexed with a new-style number (I use here # for the word number) are currently available, although the storage location of the item may require that a request for it needs to be made in order to view it. I did not receive for viewing all that I requested, but it was enough to keep me very busy.

As I looked over this old posting today, I saw that material that I have viewed is not listed. Those are the school records from the 1860s and forward in time. I have notes from those for Clare, but perhaps I discussed those in some
other posting so I did not include it in the list which I repeat here. The school records consist of yearly lists of teachers, not students. Only the teacher's or principal's name, position held, and pay rate is provided, for each year for each school. No other placename is shown nor is any family data provided in the 1860s and 1870s, which are the ones
I viewed.

The spellings are those used in the NA index book.

This will provide some idea of what can be consulted if you go to the National Archives.

Some of the above "new-style" ref. numbers were also labelled as "temporary" and that may mean that they were never given a place in the NA permanent collection. All the ones which I ordered and which appeared were labeled with new-style numbers and were said to be in "final position."

There is a series of old-fashioned wooden index-card boxes, of the type used by libraries for card indexes of
their collections. These are in a corner of the reading room by a door used only by staff. It was there that I found a reference (new-style #) to an 1841 census listing for a Carbery family in Co. Westmeath. I submitted a request slip for it and inquired when it never materialized. The staff had me go to two other offices in the building (unsuccessfully)
and then, in the final minutes before the NA closed that day, took my email and mailing addresses in order to provide an explanation later. Photocopies arrived about a month later, without charge.

In those wooden index-card boxes, noted but not ordered was these:
Survey of James Molony estate in Co. Clare 1837 999/846
Clare Abbey inhabitants - memorial in favor of William S. O'Brien

OP 1848/239
Kiltenanlea parish - rates OP 1832/575

I believe the below ones are in the same card collection as above but it is labeled in my notes as "Subject A/M card index":
Tuthill family, Co. Limerick - documents relating to property in Co. Limerick 1698 - 19th century M.S. 825
Blood family, Co. Clare - deeds relating to, 1748-1796 M. 6093
Ievers family, Mount Iever, Clare misc. docs 1669-1870 M. 5992

In that same corner of the room, there are keyed, metal cabinets holding these references:
Spaight, Samuel, Lodge Co. Clare, will and grant, 1813 fo: 280B
Moloney, Margaret, Boherglass Bodyke, probate 1905 T 10,243
Molony, Andrew, Clonebrick Co. Clare, commission 1750 Prerog Gt. Bk Fol: 170B
