We are trying to solve a family mystery concerning the family of John McGerry and Ellen Melican, who married in l870. Ellen Melican was the daughter of John Melican and Bridget Brennan of Scattery Island. All that we know of John McGerry is that he was in the British Army and was for a time stationed in India. His father was Thomas McGerry. John McGerry and Ellen Melican had at least three children: Mary, Jennie and John. But they may have had other children, including Edward, Maria, Lewis and Anne. In l911, a court case concerning this family came about when Edward claimed to be a brother of Mary McGerry (who died in NY in l908). Mary's sister Jennie denied that Edward was a brother. Very few records on this family can be found and the name seems to be spelled several different ways. Jennie married Bryan Cullow in NY and may have lived there all the rest of her life but there are other details that need to be resolved. When and where did Ellen Melican McGerry die? When and where did John McGerry die? But the big question is whether Edward McGerry was, in fact, the brother of Jennie and Mary McGerry. Any help on this would be appreciated.
