My maternal great-grandfather Thomas Hogan, of Reanahumana, (Flagmount) Co Clare was to have been an Emancipated minor at 14 - following the early death of his father. It is said that Thomas went to the courts to be deemed an Emancipated minor as his fathers family attempted to take his fathers farm - which would have left him, his minor sibling and widowed mother in the streets. They story goes that he was successful. This would have been in the 1880 or 1890's.

Does anyone know where I can start to look? What courts? Would that be in Tulla or Ennis?

Do you know the name of his father? That would be a starting point - you could then locate his death in the civil registration index, and that will narrow down your time frame considerably. Then a search of the newspapers of the time may reveal reports of court proceedings. It sounds like a fascinating story!
