In 1859 a large part of the Clare population was still starving or on subsistence rations. However, the hungry will have been relieved to read in the Irish Times as they breakfasted on the morning of September 3 1959 that ".......Mr Wallnutt's party, consisting of Sir Richard De Burgh, James Spaight, Esq., Major Walnutt, Captain O'Callaghan, Messrs .Westropp and Milnard, had splendid sport on the Scariff moors, having bagged in 5 days the extraordinary number of 236 and a half brace of grouse, six hares, and three couple of snipe; in all 473 heads of game--the best sporting known for years in Clare".
