West Clare places

Post by katrina » Tue Feb 05, 2013 8:09 am

The following locations are mentioned in my Great Uncle Fred's diary from 1904 / 1905. Is anyone with local knowledge able to give me any further info on what and where these places are please? They are all within walking or cycling distance (by the standards of 100 years ago) from Kiltrellig, and I am assuming they are all land formations of some sort.
Moabs Washpot
Horse Island & catacombs
Cahircrahine mountain, includes reference to recently discovered cavern where money was found
Island Agrush (or possibly Agruah)
Thanks!
Katrina

Hi Katrina

Here's Horse Island:

(It doesn't look like an island!)

Aillnagroagh:

Aill is Irish for a cliff; a non-Irish speaker might think it sounded like Isle.

Poulnapeasta:

(the pool of the beast)

PS: I photocopied that newspaper article for you the other day, but haven't had a chance to scan it yet.

Thanks Paddy! That certainly helps. I am writing up some notes to accompany the diary, and it's good to be able to give descriptions for places & people he mentions.
Having studied the map, I am inclined to think that his reference to Cahircrahine mountain may in fact more likely be Cahercroghaun
mountain near Ross.

And I am so pleased you found that newspaper article! It is fantastic to know the source at last.
As always, I am very appreciative of your help.
