Industrial Ennis

Post by dw422 » Wed Jan 16, 2013 11:03 am

Hi, I am writing about Ennis, between 1851 and 1926, and am looking for any information on industries in Ennis for the period

Hi,
just a quick question on the same topic. Can anyone tell me if the Bannatyne's of Ennis are the same family as the owners of Bannatyne's of Limerick.
Danny. :D

Yes Danny, they are the same family. They and John Norris Russell were the major Mill owners both in Limerick and in Ennis. There is some information about the Bannatyne family online e.g.

In answer to your original question, milling was really the only industry in Ennis in the second half of the 19th century. Whiting (grinding chalky rock I think!) also took place in the mills. You'll find a photo of this factory at

The wooden filing cabinet in the office of the Local Studies Centre is full of gems culled from anything written over many years. It's indexed alphabetically, largely though not exclusively by name.

Good luck

The British Newspaper Archive (Subscription service) has several articles on Bannatyne's of Ennis.
(I just tried Bannatyne and Ennis in the search fields).

June 1842 Mob attacks Bannatyne's Mill. Police open fire. 2 dead, 17 wounded. (Also referred to as the Ennis Massacre in some editions).
Feb 1883 Fire in the extensive mills of Bannatyne, Ennis
1926 Bannatyne's consider re-opening Mill in Ennis after closure in 1923.

Lots more detail there online, but thought some dates would narrow your search in the Clare newspapers.

Directories of Clare have lists of trades and 'industries' in Ennis for various periods.

Slater's Directory of 1870 lists quite a lot at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... s_1870.htm.

And there's also Bassett's 1875: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... trades.htm and 1880 http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... trades.htm

and Guys Directory of 1893 http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... chants.htm
