Bank of Ireland, Ennis Manager, John Harnett Milward ~ 1850s

Post by s1nead » Thu Jan 10, 2013 8:08 am

My Great Great Grandfather ~ John Harnett Milward ~ was Manager of the Bank of Ireland in Ennis from the 1850s until his death (age 53) in 1870.
Does anyone think that the Bank has an Archives of its history?
Does the Bank of Ireland still exist?
John Harnett Milward was also a major property owner (according to Griffith's Valuation) and lived at Fountain House (Lahinch) when my Great Grandmother was born in 1855.....
For such a seemingly important person, I have not been able to find much else about him.....
Any ideas, anyone?

By the skin of its teeth and with the help of a €5.2 billion bailout in 2011 the Bank of Ireland has continued to exist. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_of_Ireland where you will find a synopsis of its history.

Do they have archives ? Try calling them at Customer Services +353 1 661 5933.

Hi Susan,

The following appeared in the "Limerick Chronicle" newspaper on 17th December 1870.

We regret to announce the demise in Ennis, on yesterday, in the 66th year of his age, to the inexpressible grief of his bereaved widow and family, Mr. John H. Milward, Manager of the National Bank. The deceased gentleman during the long period of time he had been connected with the commercial interests of Ennis had discharged his onerous duties with credit to himself and advantage to the public. His consideration in financial affairs was large and judiciously applied, and he leaves behind him a character for probity and public utility which his many friends willingly accord to his memory.

The National Bank was situate on Jail Street, Ennis (now known as O'Connell Street) until 1864 when the bank moved to Bank Place. Both buildings are still here today.

This is a fine tribute to your ancestor.

Polycarp

Hi Sinead - you can get a copy of his death cert. by downloading a form from http://www.groireland.ie - this is the General Register Office for Ireland - which holds all records of births, marriages & deaths from 1864. I think the cost is 10 euros. Some years ago three banks joined together - National Bank, Munster & Leinster Bank, and Bank of Ireland - then all called Bank of Ireland. Miriam.

Limerick Chronicle obituaries are at
http://www.limerickcity.ie/Library/Loca ... Chronicle/
but there are none from 17 Dec 1870, so polycarp obviously has access to more comprehensive extracts!

Thanks Paddy for putting up that Limerick Chronicle link. I have probably been there before some time ago, but this time round I turned up a couple of interesting obits re a Garry family with strong west Clare connections.
