O'HALLORAN of Ballycunneen, Sixmilebridge and Dublin

Post by pwaldron » Sun Jan 06, 2013 9:34 pm

The O'Hallorans of Ballycunneen, descended from Thady O'Halloran the diarist (1727-1798), are fairly well documented: in Thady's common-place book; in various articles based on the common-place book, mostly by Patrick Curtin Hogan (1868-1960) who married Thady's greatgreatgranddaughter Catherine O'Halloran (1876-1976); and at
http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... family.htm
and
http://duchasnasionna.eu/halloran/jaog01.htm

Two of Thady's sons, Edward O'Halloran (b.1776) and James O'Halloran (b.1769), are less well documented than most of their siblings. They seem to have stuck together.

Hogan (NMAJ, 1948, pp.106-7) wrote:
Edward and James migrated to Dublin, where they were married --- the names of their wives are not recorded. It is known, however, that Edward had a family, and was in prosperous circumstances. James subsequently returned to Sixmilebridge, dying there, sometime after 1840, "at his house," which still stands in a grove between the village and the mills. There is a record of the death of a daughter of his, named Kate. She died in March, 1839, aged 20, and was buried in Tomfinlough. It is believed that James inherited the considerable property left by his [youngest] sister, [Lucy, 1785-1847] the Postmistress, in Six-Mile-Bridge.
Hogan also wrote, in the Clare Champion of 22 June 1946 that Edward and James migrated to Dublin and that
Edward had, however, a numerous family, some of whom emigrated to America, but nothing more is known of them, or of James, except that he died, some time after 1840, at his house near Sixmilebridge, to which he had returned. The house still stands, approached by a short avenue from the village square.
Can anyone identify the members of Edward's family who emigrated to America?

Can anyone pinpoint the location of James's house near Sixmilebridge?

The reference to the mills could be to the woollen mills north of the village (which probably didn't exist in 1840) or to the much older bleach mill or oil mills south of the village. James appears to have ceased to be an occupier before Griffith's Valuation.

Edward and James's older half-brother Matthew (1759-1797) was once "a merchant of respectability in Dublin".

Edward and James appear as merchants in Dublin soon after Matthew's death. Could they have inherited their half-brother's business, or been employed to run it on behalf of his widow and three infant children? (The infant children are not mentioned in the common-place book, but their existence is well-documented elsewhere.)

Edward and James appear in various Dublin directories in the early 19th century:
  • Wilson's Dublin Directory - 1801 Merchants, Traders, &c. at
    http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/ ... r1801n.txt
    lists
O'Halloran, James & Edward, Merchants, 22 up. Bridge Street

(Bridge Street is in St. Audoen's parish, just around the corner from Merchant's Quay, mentioned below; see map at
    http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,714782,734093,7,7 )

The building number changed before the next appearance that I have traced:
  • The Treble Almanac 1812, p.80, Merchants and Traders, at findmypast.ie, lists:
O'Halloran (James and Edward) Merchants, 21, up. Bridge-street.

The Ennis Chronicle of 7 March 1812 at
    http://astheywere.blogspot.ie/2012/12/e ... mar-7.html
    carried this advertisement:
    TO BE SET
    For a certain Term,
    CLOVER-HILL,
Situated nearly between Ennis and Limerick,
    And convenient to Bunratty Quay.
    Address (post paid letter) to J. T. O'HALLORAN, No.21 Upper-Bridge-street, Dublin.
This surely proves that the Dublin merchants were Matthew's half-brothers, as Matthew's death notice in the Ennis Chronicle of Monday 9 Jan 1797 (ffolliott extracts) read 'died yesterday morning Mathew O'Halloran of Clover Hill Esq.'
  • John Watson Stewart, The Gentleman's and Citizen's Almamack for the Year 1814, under Merchants and Traders on p.83, at findmypast.ie, lists:
O'Halloran (James and Edward) Merchants, 21, up. Bridge-street.
  • The Merchants and Traders listed on p.88 of The Treble Almanack: For the Year 1815: Forming the Most Complete Lists Published of the Present Civil, Military and Naval Establishments of Great Britain & Ireland at http://books.google.ie/books?id=BcY9AAAAcAAJ
    include:
O'Halloran (James and Edward) Merchants, 21 up. Bridge-street.
  • The Merchants and Traders listed on p.88 of The Gentleman and Citizen's Almanack ... for the Year of Our Lord 1815 at
    http://books.google.ie/books?id=nWQRAAAAYAAJ
look identical to the previous directory under a different title.
  • According to ffolliott, the LEP of Thursday 2 Oct 1817 carried this advertisement:
James O'Halloran (late of the Firm of James & Edward O'Halloran), Woollen Warehouse ... he has just returned from England ... Merchant Quay, Dublin
  • The Treble Almanac, 1818, under Merchants and Traders on p.116, at findmypast.ie, confirms that they had gone their separate ways:
    O'Halloran (Edw.) Wh. Woollen & Manchester-wareh, 21, Up. Bridge-s
    O'Halloran (James) Wh. Woollen & Manchester wareh, 13, Merchant's-q
  • A transcription of an unidentified 1820 Dublin Directory at
    http://www.from-ireland.net/genealogy-a ... -Directory
    has:
O'Halloran Edw.; Wh. Woolen & Manchester warehh. 21 Up. Bridge Street
O'Halloran Jas.; Wh. Woolen & Manchester warehh. 13 Merchants Quay
  • The Treble Almanac, 1822, under Merchants and Traders on p.112, at findmypast.ie, lists:
    O'Halloran (Edw.) Wh. Woollen & Manchester-wareh. 34, l. Bridge-st.
    O'Halloran (Jas.) Wh. Woollen & Manchester-wareh. 13, Merchant's-q
Both Edward and James appear to have married rather late in life, Edward at age 38 and James at age 48.

According to ffolliott, Edward's marriage is reported in the LEP Wednesday 11 Jan 1815:
married on Sunday last, Edward O'Halloran Esq of Dublin to Miss [Bridget] Enraght [Enright, Henrigh, Endaght, etc.] dau of the late Simon Enraght Esq of Corofin co Clare
I have so far traced only five of their 'numerous family', the first two baptised in the parish where Edward's business was located:

The Catherine Mary baptised in 1819 must be the subject of this entry in the common-place book:
1839, 13th March: Kate O'Halloran daughter of James O'Halloran Esq. of Six-Mile-Bridge died at her father's house at Six-Mile-Bridge, aged 20. She was buried on Monday 16th at Fenloe.
Edward is surely the subject of the following death notice published on 1 Feb 1836 in the Clare Journal and a similar notice which I have been told appeared in the LGA in the last week of January 1836:
At Sixmilebridge, Edmond O'Halloran, Esq., late of New Row, Dublin.
New Row is in St. Luke's parish, but in St. Audoen's ward; see map at
http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,714951,733382,7,7

My GGGgrandmother, née Margaret O'Halloran, married first Michael Kett, by whom she had five children baptised in Sixmilebridge between 1840 and 1847. She then married Daniel Carroll in Sixmilebridge, probably on 9 August 1856, but had no known children by him. Her age was given as 75 when she died on 22 Mar 1889. Could she be the Margaret baptised in Dublin in 1818 (which would make her only 70 when she died in 1889)?

There are arguments both for and against this:
  • No birth or baptismal records have been found for Margaret's known brothers John (m. Shrove Tuesday, 16 Feb 1836; d.11 Aug 1884, aged 74 or 75) and Patrick (m. 11 Jan 1846, d. 31 Jan 1867, aged 45)
  • Unless John was married at a ridiculously young age, he could at best be a half-brother of the Margaret baptised in Dublin, whose parents were not married until 1817
  • Margaret (as Mrs Kett), John and Patrick are the only O'Hallorans in Sixmilebridge in Griffith's Valuation. Who else could have inherited James and Lucy O'Halloran's property there?
  • I have a manuscript pedigree suggesting that Margaret was Lucy's sister. Their ages make this impossible. Could they have been niece and aunt?
  • Margaret told a story, later written down by her granddaughter, of being told by Biddy Earlie 'that she had a sister on a visit in Limerick but she would never come home'; could this be Kate? (The rest of the details don't fit.)
  • Margaret wrote on 1 Nov 1850: `My father was above twenty years in the Royal Navy - had a stipend --- I am now his representative' (Outrage Papers, National Archives). Could James have been in the Navy from his early teens and until showing up in trade with his brother for the first time around the age of 32?
All thoughts and suggestions welcome!

Your query:
Margaret (as Mrs Kett), John and Patrick are the only O'Hallorans in Sixmilebridge in Griffith's Valuation. Who else could have inherited James and Lucy O'Halloran's property there?

You provided a Hogan citation for the O'Halloran generations of the 1700s to early 1800s. I am assuming that the same source may be the basis for the time period of this family appearing online, including the portion I have included in these comments. The link is:
http://duchasnasionna.eu/halloran/jaog03.htm#55

The brief description of No. 29 John refers to his passing the family property to a cousin, a Roche-Kelly. This may be of some assistance for your query although it should have appeared in the Hogan article, I suppose.

"20. John O'Halloran of Ballycuneen and Moyhill (John , Thady ) was born 1791.

John married Kate Mulcorney of Ardkyle. Kate died 1880.

They had the following children:

29 M i
John O'Halloran.

Immediately after his wife's death, John O'Halloran sold Ballycunneen to his cousin and neighbour Michael Roche-Kelly of Firgrove, having previously induced his nephew and heir to emigrate to Australia. The sale of the house resulted in the disinheritance of his nephew Michael and the dispersal og [sic, of] the family."

In any case, giving credence to the stated relationship of the O'Halloran family to the indicated Roche-Kelly family of East Clare, is it safe to assume that you are then related to the current youngest British royals ? I realize the degree is quite attenuated but there has been a discussion of Roche-Kelly as documented in its relationship to the Spencers:
http://www.ourlibrary.ca/phpbb2/viewtop ... oche#p6685

The only other comments I should make at this point are that you are likely looking into property records in the Dublin repositories and I am so pleased to see that someone has put the ffolliott newspaper extracts to good use.

I'll keep an eye out for Edward's children in the U.S. There are some instances in which Clare emigrants first went to the U.S. and then re-settled in Australia, which seems to be the primary place where the O'Hallorans went.

Hi Sharon

Thanks for all that.

I included the duchasnasionna link at the very start of my post; it seems to be based solely on Hogan's 1948 NMAJ article.

Michael Roche-Kelly was not an O'Halloran descendant.

John O'Halloran, son of Thady O'Halloran the diarist, married Catherine Kelly; her nephew James Michael Kelly married Frances Maria Roche and began the Roche-Kelly dynasty.

The vendor and purchaser of Ballycunneen were related through the Kellys, not through the O'Hallorans.

The present generation of Roche-Kellys at Ballintlea are indeed closely related (5th cousins!) to the present generation of British royals. Even if I prove my descent from Thady the diarist, my connection to royalty will be far more tenuous.

I suppose I should next take a trip to the Registry of Deeds in search of references to the Dublin O'Hallorans.

As regards Australia - the three sons of Michael Kett and Margaret O'Halloran went there, and promptly disappeared without trace!

I have a bit more info on this Sally O'Halloran daughter of Thady married Thomas Sampson in 1801. She had at least two daughters a sarah Sampson and Eleanor Sampson who married Cornelius Kenny my gt gt gt uncle (son of David of Treanmanagh). I am in touch (just recently) with their Baltimore descendants. I suspect the O'Hallorans who emigrated could have gone to Rochester or Baltimore if they were going to family. Cornelius Kenny of Milford emigrated to Rochester in 1849 after the famine.

Eleanor had either a brother or an uncle John O'Halloran merchant of Limerick (from her marriage settlement).

Her and Cornelius grave is on find a grave. The name Eleanor Sampson was carried on through her Kenny descendants. Only one of her children married Cornelius D Kenny. He had 4 daughters from two marriages. He was extremely successful in his business. He left his large fortune to his daughters

I intend to write all of this up in my Kenny paper when i get around to it.

Paddy and I keep finding connections by marriage but no blood relationship - here is another we are both related to Craggaknock Kellys Clonina Kellys and to Annagh O'Dwyers now possibly O'Halloran descent are my cousins

I think there may be two connections to the Kelly-Roche family here.

Assuming Elinor Appleyard who married Thady O'Halloran is the sister of Thomas (or perhaps John - there seems to be some confusion) Appleyard, then their sister-in-law was Helena Roche Kelly, daughter of Michael Kelly and Christian Roche.

One of Helena's sisters was Jane, who married John O'Halloran. John was the son of Elinor and Thady. So John married his mother's sister-in-law's sister.

John O'Halloran's wife was Catherine, not Jane:

See Limerick Chronicle 9 Apr 1842 at
http://www.limerickcity.ie/media/04%2009%2042.pdf
`On the 6th inst., sincerely regretted by her family and friends,
Catherine, relict of the late John O'Halloran, Esq. of this city,
and sister of John Kelly, Esq.'

I would explain the double connection as follows:

In 1779, Thomas Appleyard married Helena Kelly.
In 1790, John O'Halloran, nephew of Thomas, married Catherine Kelly, sister of Helena.

Thank you for spotting that error. I couldn't read my own untidy writing.

Yes, you are correct. Jane married John Greatrakes of Rathkeale.

According to this source "Further notes on the Greatrakes family"

https://books.google.co.nz/books?id=26Y ... le&f=false

It says John Greatrakes and Jane Kelly's two daughters were Miss Ann Greatrakes, and her sister, "the widow of Mr Sampson, a co. Clare gentleman", which brings us back to the Sampson family again!

George Sampson son of Thomas Sampson Coroner and Sally O'Halloran married a Miss Greatorix in 1838 (I am unsure of my source for this it may have been a very hepful historian from round Bodyke Ger Madden. In the the Sampson book by Lila Briggs Sampson she is called Miss gratrix and there is a note no children- for which reference I am indebted to Paddy Waldron
https://archive.org/stream/sampsonfamil ... 5/mode/2up). I assume that is a wrong recording of Greatrakes

My only real interest in Sampson was the Kenny connection. Georges sister Eleanor married Cornelius Kenny of Milford Miltown Malbay. They emigrated to the US. When their descendant Charles B Reeves (who sadly lately passed away at 92 http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/obitua ... story.html) visited Ireland, I did some research into his ancestry on both sides. I have a copy of Cornelius (Cornie) and Ellens marriage settlement
