Looking for descendants of Cullinans of Dangananella West
Posted: Sat Dec 15, 2012 6:42 pm
I am trying to trace the descendants of Charles Cullinan and Bridget McMahon who married in Doonbeg parish on 24 Jan 1880 and afterwards lived in the townland of Dangananella West in the adjoining Kilmacduane parish. Bridget was my first cousin, three times removed.
In 1901, they are at
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... t/1078650/
with four sons Michael, Thomas, Martin and John.
Michael emigrated to the U.S. some time between 1901 and 1905 and married Annie Diggins at St. Leo's in Chicago on 11 Apr 1909. See register at
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... c=11823352
On 9 Apr 1905, Tom Cullinan (22, male, single, labourer), last residence Kilrush, sailed from Queenstown on the Lucania. He arrived at Ellis Island on 15 Apr 1905, bound for New York, to join his brother Michl. Cullinan at 59 Vesey St., New York. I have been told that one of his first cousins said that he settled eventually in Buffalo, NY.
In 1911, the parents are at
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... st/361055/
with their two remaining sons Martin and John. The census return says that the mother had seven children in all, five still living in 1911, so three had left home and were still alive.
A few weeks after this census, on 26 Apr 1911, John Cullinan (22, single, male, labourer) left Queenstown on the Caronia and arrived at Ellis Island on 3 May 1911. His brother Michael Cullinan of 7712 Normal Avenue in Chicago had paid his fare. He was 5' 9" with dark complexion and dark hair and had been born in Danganelly. His nearest relative at home was his father Charles Cullinan of Danganelly and he was bound for Chicago.
Martin inherited the home farm and eventually erected a tombstone to his father, inscribed:
`Erected by Martin Cullinan in loving memory of his father Charles who died April 30th 1931 aged 75 years.'
See http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... ptions.htm
I have been told that Martin had a son and daughter who both eventually went to England.
Charles Cullinan of Dangananella West (b. Abt 1851/7, d. 1931) could be confused with the slightly older Charles Cullinan of Moanmore Lower (b. Abt 1842/7, d. 1915), who appears in 1901 and 1911 at
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... r/1081761/
and
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... er/363719/
Charles of Moanmore married Mary Keane in 1876 (Kilrush PLU q1 v4 p401), and according to the 1911 census they had 13 children, of whom I have names for only 11.
Three of the five children of Charles of Dangananella West alive in 1911 are easily identified: Martin, John and Michael. I am trying to prove that the other two alive in 1911 were Patrick and Thomas, and that the two who died before 1911 were Denis and Jim. I have found no confirmation that the Denis and Jim that I have heard of belong in this family, and have found entries in civil registration indexes that suggest that they do not.
I have a marriage certificate for Patrick Cullinan (son of Charles Cullinan, farmer) and Elizabeth O'Connor, married on 28 Apr 1909 in the Church of Mary Immaculate Refuge of Sinners, Rathmines, Dublin. They appear in 1911 with their first child at
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... oad/48606/
which confirms that both were born in Clare. I have lots more information on their family (including a retired Chief Justice of Lesotho!), but have not yet been able to contact any living descendant.
The Cullinan & Cullinane Family Genealogy Project Website at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... /x0115.htm
(which does not appear to have been updated since 2001) describes a suspiciously similar, but far from identical, family group:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... /p0018.htm
To further complicate matters, the surname is pronounced Quillinan and occasionally written Quinlan, but all official records that I have seen use Cullinan.
Can anyone confirm that either the Patrick Cullinan who married Elizabeth O'Connor in Dublin or the Thomas Cullinan who married Delia (or Bridget) O'Day (or O'Dea) in Buffalo was a son of Charles Cullinan and Bridget McMahon?

Plate XVIII gives some sources, but no other further details; seeThomas Cullinan (c1881-1933) married Delia Bridget O'Day. From this marriage, there were four daughters and one son (so far identified): Rita Cullinan Hanrihan, Suzanne M. Cullinan Kulp, Thomas J. Cullinan (1916-1986), Anna Cullinan and Mary Margaret Cullinan McNaughton. This family is listed at 18 Euclid Place in Buffalo between 1920 and 1956. Thomas Cullinan (Sr.) had five brothers, John Cullinan; Daniel Cullinan (who remained in Ireland); Michael Cullinan (to Chicago); Patrick Cullinan (in Buffalo) and Martin Cullinan (in Buffalo). This family can be found on Plate XVIII.
