Tension in Ire. pre-Cromwell, detailed in official report

Post by smcarberry » Sat Jan 10, 2009 6:51 pm

In case you like to read up on the political intrigues and negative social dynamics raging in Ireland in the 1600s, there is a Google book Report on the Manuscripts of the Earl of Egmont by the Great Britain Royal Commission on Historical ... published in 1905, at
books.google.com/books?id=4E0RAAAAYAAJ...

The period covered seems to span the mid-1500s to the 1640s, the eve of Cromwellian action. There are not many sections which result using Clare as a keyword in the provided search engine, but there is a lot of discussion about Lord Inchiquin, with some description of Ingoldsby and the Percivall family of Limerick, in a long introduction written as a history of the times by a specific author. That matches details provided in many sections which provide names, dates, and places, in that political tensions clearly impacted the ability of the commercial class to go about its business. See p. 208 in which a Hickey from Mallow, Cork, was detained for questioning regarding his usual trip to Clare in 1643.
