Interpreting handwriting in Tithe Applotment Books

Post by pwaldron » Tue Nov 13, 2012 11:52 am

Over the years, there have been differences in interpretation of the handwriting in the Tithe Applotment Books for the parish of St. Munchin's, which straddles the border between county Clare and county Limerick. A high resolution image of the relevant page of the original book has been available since the launch of the online Tithe Applotment Books last Thursday. It is at
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarc ... _00079.pdf
I am particularly interested in entries number 14, 16 and 17 on this page.

Those who believe in pay-per-view access to records would leave me to look at these three entries in isolation; the free-to-air philosophy enables me to look at other samples of the same handwriting, and other conventions used, both on this page and in the rest of the parish.

If anyone would care to send me a private message with an independent interpretation of what these three entries say, I would be very grateful (just click the "pm" button below). Remember to use the zoom control in your PDF viewer to blow up the relevant words. I will summarise the results here after a few days (and explain the significance of how the entries are interpreted!).

After you have looked at the original and suggested your own independent interpretation, you can check out three of the published interpretations at the following links:

Thanks Paddy for telling me about this link. It has cleared up a few things by giving the full record including the fact that my grandfather called our family home in Doonogan Dromin and said it was the name of an old Townland (it is such on the ordnance survey)

Here David Kenny has it as Drominaveigh

I looked at some of the Kennys I am researching. I note that I can pick out the ones I want. They call themselves gentlemen signing leases and marriage settlements unless they have a business in which case they sign as merchant.
The Kennys are called Mr in the tithe applotments

I have a rent roll from the Mahon estate where a Gallery relative is referred to as Mr Gallery (I am not sure whether he is Christoper of Newhall) or who he is. All others on the list are called first name last name no title.

Mr clearly had some significance early 1800s. I know we are Mahon descent (twice) but am not sure if same Mahons though I think likely. I was not sure if Mr was because a cousin even if distant

regards
