Hi Lyn - you could get a copy of his birth certificate - log on to http://www.familysearch.org - and take note of the the details - - then log on to http://www.groireland.ie - and download a form - - this is the General Register Office for Ireland - - certified copy of birth cert. costs 10 euros. There are still Russells in Kilkee - involved in football. Some great photos on http://www.clarelibrary.ie - fotoweb - - esp. photos on Murphy/Hynes collection, Kilkee. Miriam. p.s. 'foto' is Irish for 'photo'!!!

Generally, school records like roll books and registers are kept in the school. It would be worth contacting the head teacher of the national school in Kilkee as a first step. See http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/cominf ... kee_ns.htm. This modern school dates back only to 1999, but they may have an idea as to where the old registers ended up.

See also http://www.kilkeeparish.com/schools/sco ... al-school/.
"Scoil Réalt na Mara, is a modern mixed national school. It began in September 1998 when the Convent Primary School and Boys National School amalgamated. It was opened in 1999 by Minister Sile de Valera."

and http://www.kilkee.ie/about_history.html:
“On the feast of the Maternity of Our Lady, 5th November 1871, five sisters from the newly established convent in Kilrush came to Kilkee at the request of Fr. Martin Cleary, P.P to found a convent in the beautiful 'Brighton of the West'. In a temporary premises the sisters opened a school that was attended by children from the surrounding areas. Lord Francis and Lady Conyngham examined the workings of the school with apparent interest and gave the site for the present Convent, the foundation stone of which was laid on the Feast of the Sacred Heart in 1874. In 1878, the school was placed under the National Board of Education. The primary school closed its doors on 25th June, 1998 after 120 years of learning. The sisters also opened a Secondary school in 1943 catering for pupils from the Corca Bhascinn (West Clare) Peninsula.”

The National Archives do have some school roll/register books – but none for County Clare. See http://www.nationalarchives.ie/topics/N ... tschs.html

Clare County Library does have copies of some registers, (which were donated to us), but none for Kilkee. See http://opac.clarelibrary.ie/search/X?SE ... rchscope=1

We also have put some donated school registers online. See http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... nealog.htm (bottom left-hand corner), but, unfortunately not for Kilkee.
We have:
1865-1888 Boys’ and Girls’ School Registers, Tiermaclane National School
1857-1885; 1882-1926; 1926-1929 CBS Ennistymon School Register
1863-1975 Lack School, Kilchreest: Pupils, Teachers, Managers
1873-1960 Pupils, Principals and Monitors, Knockjames NS
1876-1970 Kilbaha N.S. Roll Books
1886-1908 (Boys) School Register, 1899-1932 (Girls) School Register, Kilfenora National School
1864-1880 Register of Infants in Bansha National School
1864-1922 (Girls) School Register, Kinturk National School
1871-1896 (Girls) School Register, Kilshanny National School
1888-1966 Boys’ and Girls’ School Registers, Ballyea National School
1898-1952 Ennis National School Registers
1907-1922 (Boys) School Register, 1906-1922 (Girls) School Register, Lisroe National School
1908-1966 Pitfield National School Register

As far as I am aware the Clare County Archives holds some original school registers also. To contact the archivist see http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/archiv ... act_us.htm
