Ennis in my mind

Post by shamus111 » Tue Dec 16, 2008 9:31 pm

This post is being submitted by an unusual old man -- me.

Unusual in the sense that I am even on the Internet because seniors in my age group grew up with pencil and pen and the keyboard was almost unknown. Just ask a senior if they have an e-mail address and you will get an evasive answer.

Unusual in the sense that I grew up in Ennis and like many emigrants, I left in 1954 and have lived in Canada since then. I am among the few who realize how much Ennis has changed.

Several years ago Ennis had its own web site. It was probably because of some information age funding but when the finding ended, the web site ended. If I had known at the time, I would have saved all the great photographs but they disappeared with the web site. Since then I have e-mailed all the politicians about organizing another web page but never even got a reply. Maybe Irish politicians are as useless as Canadian politicians.

I shouldn't complain. Maybe more people from Ennis will eventually find that this site exists.

Say hi to my old friend Paddy Brown.

Hello Jim. The original Ennis website at http://www.ennis.ie is indeed gone. It was a product of the Information Age Town project, and the photographs were available at http://gallery.ennis.ie. If you look for http://www.ennis.ie now you will be redirected to http://www.visitennis.ie, a new tourism site for Ennis.

All is not lost, however, as the Web Archive service at http://www.archive.org/index.php holds a copies of the entire site - including the photos. It just takes a little patience to get to them - you have to wait for the images to be retrieved and uploaded. Here's one set of photos:

http://web.archive.org/web/200302121340 ... 60s?page=1

The photo gallery (at a particular date) is at http://web.archive.org/web/200301270838 ... .ennis.ie/

and the website is at
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.ennis.ie

The Web Archive is a wonderful resource.

Regards,

Thanks Admin.

It's nice to know that there's someone alive out there.

I can show my seven grandkids what Ennis was like in the 50s thanks to those videos put in by Mr Bluett.

You're welcome Jim. We do have some videos taken by Bill Bluett on our website, as well as a substantial collection of his photographs.
See http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... _films.htm for the videos
and http://foto.clarelibrary.ie/fotoweb/Gri ... iveId=5012 for the photos.
Information about our online photo collections can found at http://foto.clarelibrary.ie/fotoweb/col ... s_info.fwx.
We also have a lot of information on Ennis in our Places and Placenames section at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... nistwn.htm.
All the best,

You have a great site. Keep up the good work. This is a poem I wrote several years ago about Ennis -- if the link works properly.

Merry Christmas everyone.

It is now Friday Dec 19th, 2008 here in Toronto and it's snowing like mad. We are definately going to have a white Christmas.

I just hope my snow blower works tomorrow morning because there is no way I could shovel all this. Because I have three sons with their three wives and about 10 kids coming over on Sunday.

Jim,

Thanks for sharing the atmosphere of Ennis as you knew it. I hope you survived snow clearance, preferably with the help of
some of those sons.

Here is a book which you might like to locate in a local library or obtain via interlibrary loan:
Spellissy, Sean. Ennis in old photographs. Dublin: Gill & Macmillan, 2004. 120 pages ISBN 0717135349

Merry Christmas to all,

Thanks Sharon.

Had the driveway done before they arrived.

It is difficult to believe but the kids had six laptops going all at the same time playing some wierd game that one of my sons loaded on each laptop.

I'm not sure what these kids are going to do when they grow up but I get the impression they are very well educated already and their average age is about ten.

Phoned one of my brothers in Ennis today. Apparently this recession is really hurting Ireland.
