more Pilkington Burke connections

Post by katrina » Sat Sep 08, 2012 6:36 am

Posted this as new topic as I don't think it is relevant to Paddy's post re gravestone inscription, but may be beneficial to others searching same names.
From letter from my great-uncle Francis Pilkington in Ireland to his brother Fred Pilkington in Australia dated April 1897: “We buried poor Long Dick Pilkington’s wife a few days ago.”
Search for female Pilkington died in Clare in April 1897 on familysearch brings up Bidelia Pilkington died in Ennis aged 90 (estimated birth year 1807) https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FTD9-6ZS
Gravestone inscription at Drumcliffe: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... rname4.htm
In loving memory of Richard Pilkington died 13th. December 1889. Bidelia his wife died 1st. April 1898. Florence Crowley their great grand aunt died 26th. July 1893. Erected by their affectionate Daughter Catherine. May They Rest In Peace. Mary Agnes Crowley died 26th. February 1935
“Long Dick” (let’s assume he was very tall!) is presumably the Richard in above graveyard transcription, and most likely Richard Pilkington the son of Richard Pilkington of Gower Hall & Maria Blood who married in 1804, and therefore a great-uncle of both Francis & Fred Pilkington. (above letter)
Death certificate for Richard Pilkington, died 11th December 1889 in Cahircalla, Ennis, aged 83 years, a farmer. The informant was Kate Bourke, daughter, of Church St, Ennis.
Marriage between Catherine Pilkington, age 17, daughter of Richard Pilkington, and John Burke, age 43, widower, took place on 23 January 1868 in Ennis. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGZV-XLK
Catherine & John had daughter Mary Burke born 15 December 1873 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FPBB-TY2
Mary Burke married William Crowley 3rd quarter 1891 in Ennis
John Burke died 9th April 1895 aged 69 yrs according to headstone at Drumcliffe http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... rname1.htm
Catherine Burke (nee Pilkington) died 3rd quarter 1926 in Ennis.
Catherine Burke appears in the 1901 census living in Church St Ennis, a widow, shopkeeper & tobacconist, RC, speaks English & Irish. With her is her widowed daughter Mary Crowley aged 27, and Mary’s daughter Eva Crowley aged 7. (Eva Crowley’s birth registered Ennis 1893)
1911 census has Catherine Burke and Mary Crowley living in Abbey St Ennis. Can’t find any further record of Eva in census or civil registration.
I don’t know the identity of great grand-aunt Florence Crowley in the gravestone transcription, nor the maiden name of Bidelia. Any hints welcome!
I had the 1889 death of Richard Pilkington as a possible match for the Richard son of Richard & Maria on my family tree, but nothing to definitely link him until I found that single line in the 1897 letter.

Another Pilkington – Burke connection, not yet confirmed as one of ours:
Richard Pilkington, labourer, semi-literate, convicted in county Clare in 1850 for sheep stealing & sentenced to 10 years transportation. Arrived in Swan River Colony (Western Australia) aged 20 in June 1853 on board “Phoebe Dunbar”. Married Emily Burke http://www.fremantleprison.com.au/Pages/Convicts.aspx
WA BDM records have the following info:
Richard Pilkiton married Emma Burk in Bunbury in 1870
3 children John born 1871, Maria born 1873 & Edward born 1875
Richard Pilkington died in 1876 aged 40
Emma Burke remarried William Brennan/Breman(another Clare name?) in 1880 and had 5 more children.

Thanks for all that, Katrina! I don't see any immediate connections, but will keep these additional people in mind.
