Clunes of Clare and Indianapolis IN

Post by smcarberry » Sun Dec 14, 2008 5:27 pm

The rise to riches story of the Clunes in Indianapolis was so compelling that I did a little census work and Googling, which
made their family history even more prototypically the one of Irish boy made good in the New World (see the attached pdf). While they made the unfortunate move of suing their fellow Irish in that city, they also opened their homes to a succession of fellow Irish as they arrived and made their way into American society. American biographies abound with instances of "century farms" in which immigrants have managed to hold onto their land and keep the business in the family over many decades, but the Clune furniture business is the first such that I have encountered as still in existence after 150 years.

Enjoy,
