I found this at St. Mary's Cathedral in Limerick only last Friday:
`In
loving memory
of
William James Macnamara
of Bushy Park, Ennis, Co. Clare
who fell asleep
23rd February 1931, aged 68.
So he giveth his beloved sleep
and underneath are the everlasting arms.
Also his wife Mary Sarita,
who died 6th May 1947.'
They married 9 Jun 1897, but I found them in a hotel in London in the 1901 census, so I'm not sure when they first lived in Bushy Park.

This is what Mr. Weir's book says of the history of the house:

Colonel William Wright lived in Bushy Park prior to his moving to Clontarf. He died circa 1764. This house was in the hands of the Ennistymon Macnamaras in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Timothy Macnamara had bought it from the estate of Robert Hickman for £1050. In 1855, William N. Macnamara leased the house and its sixty-eight acres to Thomas Cullinan. His successor, W.J. Macnamara of Bushy Park, was a Justice of Peace in 1878, and High Sheriff in 1892. He married Mary Sarita Keane of Hermitage in 1897. In the early twentieth century, Michael Keary, who lived here, was Secretary to the Clare County Council.

As gratifying as it is to identify Bushy Park House, the mystery still remains as to what connection my wife’s grandfather, Michael Browne, had to this house. Michael brought exactly four photos with him when he emigrated from Clondegad Parish to Boston, Massachusetts in the early 1900’s: one was of his father, the other was of his mother and brothers, and the remaining two were of this house. Looking at the names of the owners and occupants, however, none seem to be connected to our line of Brownes (although I freely admit that my knowledge of Browne extended families is pretty limited). And also, the Brownes were living 20 km away in Cappanageeragh for at least the previous three generations.

The one angle I am running down is that Michael Browne’s mother was Susan Casey, and there was a Thomas Casey on the 1901 and 1911 censuses who lived a stone’s throw from Bushy Park House in Drumcaran Beg. Who knows if they’re related, but it’s a place to start.

The house looks great and shows what can be done with pre-1850 structures. There is not a lot of description on the house's history at this site, but it is seen on Ordnance Survey maps from that time period:

Census returns for Bushy Park House

There were two first class houses in the townland of Bushypark in the 1901 and 1911 censuses. We can take Hugh Weir's word for the fact that Bushy Park House in the photograph was W. J. Macnamara's house, but checking the window count on the census House and Building Returns leaves some room for doubt.

There were only four servants at home for the 1901 census (when the Macnamaras were in London):

The coachman was in charge for the 1911 census:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... rk/355009/

William Macnamara appears to have been staying in the County Clare Club in Ennis (now the Rowan Tree):
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... ad/353042/
His wife Mary MacNamara was staying with her brother in nearby Cloghleagh:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... l_/352796/

There were 49 occupied townlands in Dysert DED in 1901 and no Kilnamona DED. There were 20 occupied townlands in Dysert DED in 1911 and 26 occupied townlands in the new Kilnamona DED.

Croughaun More and Croughaun-beg in 1901 were apparently combined into Croaghaun in 1911. Dysert townland had three residents in 1901 but no residents in 1911, when it was in Dysert DED. Shalee townland had two residents in 1901 but no residents in 1911, when it was in Kilnamona DED.

By the way, W.J. Macnamara of Bushy Park was too young to be a Justice of the Peace in 1878 - he was born 8 Jan 1863.

This page appeared in the 1987 Kilmaley Parish magazine and was a reprint of Hugh Weir's book "Houses of Clare".

I hope it helps!

Only the servants are in the house for the 1901 and 1911 census but one of the forms still gives the owner as W. J. McNamara (who was a Justice of the Peace in 1878 and High Sheriff in 1892. He married Mary Sarita Keane of Hermitage in 1897).

William James MacNamara appears to have left Bushy Park before he died:

Macnamara William James Ballinacurra House 24/02/1931 aged 68, formerly of Ennis, buried at St. Mary's Cathedral (funeral report, 28/2/1931)

That's an interesting listing of deaths. Does something like that exist for other places in County Clare? I've been trying to confirm the 1850 death date of my relative George Brown(e) in Cappanageerah? I've not been able to find anything like this. Sorry to hijack the thread...

Thanks...Kurt

County Clare newspaper notices: http://www.irelandoldnews.com/Clare/index.html

The Limerick Chronicle included notices of many Clare BMDs, but only the local Limerick notices have been indexed on the above website.

Thanks...I poked around and didn't see anything, though some months are missing. I'll keep looking.

Here is a portion of a supplement to the Commercial Gazette edition of 15 April 1891, page 35, a London newspaper. This is a multi-page section entitled "List of Principal Creditors" without any reference to court proceedings, so I suppose the purpose of this is to show how well connected/funded the businessmen are.

Greetings from Co.Cork

Thanks to all for attached info on Bushy Park House!

I was fascinated to come across this Bushy Park House topic, My Grandmother Ellen Desmond was one of the servants in 1901 census, also her sister Mary, Ellen married my grandfather, Roger O'Sullivan in June 1906 in Macroom Co.Cork and she died in 1963, her sister remained in Bushy Park, got ill, came home to Co.Cork and died 1930 approx, we have a photo of her at Mc Namara's in her Maids costume serving a very fine tea outdoors, would love to know how they both ended up as servants up there, long trip from Clondrohid, Co.Cork. I visited the house in 2010 once the 1901 census was released and was delighted to be on the same door step as the Desmond sisters 109 years later...

Will dig up photos and upload

Regards

Roger O'Sullivan, Farran, Co.Cork.
