Shooting of Edward (Edmond) Burke 08-16-1922

Post by janetgavrun » Wed Aug 22, 2012 5:54 pm

My great uncle Edward Burke was born in Ireland 1870 (1872)
to Martin Burke & Honora O'Brien Burke. Cragaknock, Clare.
Around 1890 he left Ireland and relocated in jersey city, nj usa.
Edward departed from new york city, ny August 1922 for Ireland,
to visit his mother. He arrived in Cobb Ireland 08-16-1922. On his
way to Clare in Knocknagoshel, County Kerry as he passed Hedley's
Bridge he was shot by men in uniform.

Ed was taken to county infirmary, Tralee & his arm was amputated.

I would like to find out any information there is about the shooting
& what happened to Edward Burke.

I do know he was still in Ireland in May 1924 waiting to be granted
compensation for the shooting.

Edward was on his way to Doonbeg to visit his mother my great grandmother
Honora O'Brien Burke Killeen. My grandfather Thomas Killeen was a half brother
of Ed's.

Did Ed get his compensation, did he return to the usa. did he die of the shooting,
are there any records of the shooting.

Hope someone can shed some light on Edward Burke and his story.
Thanks, Janet

Hello Janet,

In "The Irish Times" of 20th October 1922, there is mention of a compensation claim by Edward Burke of Tralee, County Kerry, to the Irish Provisional Government, of a personal injuries claim for compensation in the quantum of £8,000 (eight thousand pounds).

I do not know if Mr Burke was successful in pursuing his claim, but it is certain he did lodge a claim in that specific amount.

£8,000 in 1922 was a significant sum of money.

polycarp,
Amazing find!!!!!!!!!! The Irish Times Newspaper Oct 20, 1922
article on Ed Burke and his compensation award. How on earth
did you find this article? In the past I tried to research the
archives of The Irish Times, however their archives started 1996.
I'm probably doing something wrong. Thanks so much for the info.

Lenc, I now have access for 24hrs to the Irish Times archives.
I have found the one article oct. 20, 1922 about his compensation
claim for personal injury.
I haven't found anything else. you said something about indexes.
Maybe i am not search the right way. i search things like name/dates/shooting/
county kerry. Is there another way to do this search???
I have about 7 more hours to do my research.
thanks,
janet
