For the past while, I’ve been researching my grandfather, Michael Downes from Merchant’s Quay in Kilrush who served as a Volunteer in Kilrush in 1917. In 1918, he joined Peadar Clancy – a personal friend of his – in Dublin and served as 1st Lieut. Lewis Gun Section in G Company, 1st Battalion, Dublin City Brigade until he returned to Clare in March 1922 and joined the 1st Western Division of the Free State Army. He was killed in Sept 1922 somewhere in Clare.
Attached is a photo of my grandfather (back row, left) with some of his compatriots. This photo must have been taken between Mar and Sept 1922, but I don’t know where it was taken or who the other men are. I’m hoping that someone might be able to identify some of the men or, perhaps, from the background in the photo, be able to take a guess a where it was taken. If anyone could throw any light on this, I’d very much appreciate it.
