Kilmihil Death Register - a great resource

Post by murf » Fri Jun 08, 2012 10:56 pm

I have just had occasion to discover what an extremely useful resource is the Kilmihil Death Register which lives on the Kilmihil Parish website at http://www.kilmihil.com/genealogy/deaths/deaths.php.
The register contains the name and address of the deceased, the date of death and date and location of burial, but also the name of the deceased's father and maiden name of the mother. The record only commences in 1941, but because of the inclusion of the parent names it "bridges the divide" well back into the 19th Century.
One of the most difficult tasks in building a family history is keeping track of the daughters. Women born in the middle of the 19th Century who married prior to 1900, effectively disappear when one tries to locate them in the 1901 census, because they have changed their name and moved away to reside on their husband's property.
My problem involved my g grandmother's brother Charles Callinan who lived in Drumellihy(Cunningham), Kilmacduane Parish, and who had four daughters, all of whom married famers to the east, residing in the townlands of Corraige and Ballyduneen in Kilmihil Parish. By tracking their parent's names in the Death Register I was able to locate all four daughters and their married names. It was then a simple matter to identify their respective families in the censuses. An added bonus was that two of the younger brothers were living with their married sisters at that time.
Through this valuable resource I have greatly expanded my knowledge of this particular family.

Hi Murf - I agree with you re Kilmihil website. There is a 'blog' re Callinans/Ryans/Breens by Ellen Callinan on http://kilrushconnect.multiply.com/journal - lots of info re Callinans.

How annoying that multiply.com is long gone!

I noted that Kevin added useful comments about the Callinans there, clearly after the Wayback Machine harvested the page for the one and only time:
