Coolisteige Castle

Would love to know more about Cooastyke (Coolisteige) Castle, near Clonlara. My great-grandfather, Robert Taylor, was born there in 1835. His father later sold the Estate to a Mr Maloney, and emigrated to America.
Robert came to Ausralia in 1854. From photos, it looks like a ruin. Would it have been habitable in the 1830s?
Thankyou,
Gabrielle Finn

Gabrielle,

I see that this castle went under various names such as the Castle of Cullistecke, Cuil Lis-Taídhg, Angle of the Fort of Teige, Cool-a-styke and Cool-lis-teige
(see http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... uation.htm
and http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... parish.htm
and http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlki ... -Clare.htm).

I wonder if Hardiman's Deeds (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Hardiman ) might tell you more about this castle.

Paddy

Thank you, Paddy; that is fantastic information!
I'll try and get hold of a copy of Hardiman'd Deeds.
Will also keep trying to find out more about the Castle's 19th century history.
Thanks again,
Gabrielle

Hello Gabrielle,

There is an article on Coollisteige Castle in "The Other Clare" journal, volume 31, 2007, pages 5 to 7 by Risteard UaCroinin and Martin Breen. They note that the castle was recorded as a ruin in 1837 in Lewis's Topographical dictionary. There are good photographs and illustrations of the castle in the article.

All the best,

Polycarp

Dear Polycarp,
Thankyou so much. The article sounds wonderful.

Dear helpful library staff:
How can I read this article on-line from Australia?
Cheers,
Gabrielle?

Gabrielle,
to my knowledge "The Other Clare" has never been published on the web. A list of contents for Volumes 1 to 27 is available at http://www.xs4all.nl/~tbreen/Journals/Clare.html.

I just had reason to refer yet again to Thaddeus Breen's excellent website cited above. From http://www.xs4all.nl/~tbreen/journals.html one can find tables of contents for not only The Other Clare but also three other Clare-related journals:
Dal gCais
Sliabh Aughty
North Munster Antiquarian Journal

In your search for your Taylor ancestors, have you ever come across any information about Robert Sambrooke Taylor (born in England 15 Nov 1789, died here at Killaloe 4 Feb 1866)? He farmed in Essex before moving to Killaloe. A mutual cousin is looking for more information about him.

Sorry, I have not come across that particular Robert Taylor, but he may be connected. Am at a bit of a standstill with my Taylors. I believe they were related to Baron Hugh Massy and have discovered that in 1774, Catherine, daughter of Col Edward Taylor, married Hugh Massy, but i am having trouble connecting Col Ed Taylor to my ggg grandfather, John Taylor, of Coolisteague.
Re the article in "The Other Clare", sadly I am unable to get it here in Australia.
Thank you, and I'll keep searching

I have come across a few other Taylors in the parish of Kiltenanlea and nearby parishes who may be of interest to you:

As early as 1821, Captain William Vere Taylor was living at Burtonhill, in the parish of Killeely, County Clare, later the residence of Edward Hodges Goggin, his son-in-law. See article in The Times, Wednesday, Oct 17, 1821; pg. 3; Issue 11379; col C, taken from The Ennis Chronicle and dated 11 Oct 1821.

This could be the same William Taylor whose daughter Catherine m. James Vokes son of Simon at Kiltenanlea on 1 Nov 1849 and had a family including Eliza Vokes b. Limerick 5 Oct 1864 (see IGI) and another Eliza b. 29 Dec 1886.

Here's another possible daughter:
CONYERS, Charles
Wife: Eliza TAYLOR Age: 20
Marriage Date: 30 Oct 1852 Recorded in: Kiltenanlea, Clare Collection: Civil Registration
Husband's Father: Christopher CONYERS
Wife's Father: William TAYLOR
Source: FHL Film 101337 Dates: 1852 - 1852

Any further information on these Taylors would be welcome.

Thank you. It looks like Capt William Taylor had 3 daughters married between 1849 and 1852. I wonder if he was a brother of my gg grandfather. The generation would be the same. Will try to find out more about him.
