I'm trying to figure out the County Clare birth place name in the attached document snippet. Can anyone help me?

Thank you.

Hello John.
It looks to me to be spelled as Kalourin, which sounds like Killuran, the name of a Civil Parish and townland in Clare. Here's a link to the parish http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... lurane.htm, and to the townland http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... lluran.htm

There was a James Madagan living in Killuran Parish in 1826 http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... an_tab.htm (and other Madigans etc), and there were Madigans in the parish in 1855 http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... lluran.htm.

Thank you for the Killuran placename. That looks like it!

I should probably post a bit more about James Madigan and his family here in the US:

When he arrived in the US he was already married to Anne McNamara and they had children Matthew, Martha, Patrick, Margaret, and John. All of the children were also born in Ireland, all but one married and had children. All but one died in and around Leominster, Worcester County, Massachuetts, USA. The name of Anne McNamara is taken from the death records of her two sons Matthew and Patrick. I've had no luck finding a passenger list with this family.

I'm also fairly certain he had a close relationship with a John Madigan, who appeared as a witness for James' naturalization. John arrived in the US earlier than James on 4 Jul 1844 and was naturalized in Leominster. The place name of John's birth is simply County Clare, Ireland. John and James may be brothers. The witnesses to his naturalization were John P. McNamara and Lawrence Boland.

If John and James Madigan are indeed brothers, their death records in the Leominster/Fitchburg area of Massachusetts both indicate that their parents names were: Patrick and Mary[maiden name not stated] Madigan.

This site is the best thing I've found for Ireland, hands down, no kidding, what a wonderful thing! Now if only I could find Maggie, Annie, John, and Michael Madigan (all b. 1860-1875) presumably from Labasheeda, I'd be a most happy person indeed. And if I could find Thomas Donovan Hart's place of birth...and.... Well you get my drift here: never ending but much fun.

Just so you know (since it will not assist with the placename inquiry you posted), James Madigan, age 30, arrived with no one else of that surname, as one of 92 passengers recorded on the ship Planter which arrived from Limerick into NYC on 27 Sep 1850, according to the records on the Nara AAD site. The Planter ship manifest number is 4865 and this link might take you directly to the the search engine already inputted with that manifest number, so that you can see the record listing for yourself:

Thank you! I wonder where the rest of them are? They all seem in place by 1855.

According to Census of 1901 - Ellen Madigan, age 81, living with her son Pat and family at Cloondrinagh, Kilfiddane - - to see more info on this go to www.clarelibrary.ie - Genealogy - Research Support, - Civil Parish Index - and select Kilfiddane - this is the name of parish which includes Labasheeda - - this name means 'Bed of Silk' !!

Somewhat silly question, but how does one know Kilfiddane contains Labasheeda? I'm sure there's some obvious way of finding that out, but I'm being particularly dense today. While wandering in either the 1901 or 1911 census I could have sworn I saw another parish name with Labasheeda, but of course I can't find it now.

Thank you.

I hate to contradict the wonderful Miriam Scahill, but I think Labasheeda is in Killofin Civil Parish. It lies in the townland of Cullenagh which is in Killofin http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... llofin.htm

If you go to our new maps system (follow the Maps link from the main library website), and if you know the location of Labasheeda, you can determine the townland it's in, and the parish also.

This link shows that it's in the townland of Cullenagh
http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/maps/gmap/index.html#M1C52.62518!-9.25169Z14O6a6L11

and this one shows it's in the parish of Killofin
http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/maps/gmap/index.html#M1C52.61489!-9.25096Z13O6a6L18

To get these links, I selected the Google map in the top left hand drop-down list, and chose the 1842 OS 6" option from the Overlay drop-down list, and toggled the parish and townland features on and off in the Features options on the left.

My apologies !! - I should have said 'DED - District Electoral Division - of Kilfiddane - this includes Killofin - which looks to be a small area - just a peninsula with the River Shannon on one side and Clonderlaw Bay on the other. Perhaps the Madigan family are just a stone's throw from Labasheeda - but in Parish of Kilfiddane.

Thank you. That agrees with family lore. "On the banks of the River Shannon" is what I recall my grandmother saying, though that was some 80 years after her mother arrived in US.

My thanks also go to the admin for the map links. That's very helpful.
