Hello Sharon,

Another notable Clareman buried in St Mary's cemetery in Troy, New York, is the Knockjames (Affick, Tulla) native Hugh Quigley, who died 30 April 1883.

Hugh Quigley was a Roman Catholic priest and author, and there is a profile of him on the Clare library website in the 'Clare People' section. He achieved some notoriety in Ireland, Scotland and the United States.

All the best,

Polycarp

While I have certainly heard about Fr. Hugh Quigley before, I don't believe I ever heard that he was buried in Troy. Thanks
for that info. I have not seen the text on him on the Clare library site, so I'll take a look.

Fr Quigley is the subject of a recent biographical / critical paper by Johana Schwartz of the English Department, Stanford University. "Hugh Quigley: missionary, author, American cowboy." Her paper is in the Local Studies Centre."

which includes:
"Quigley worked with ...Irish immigrants during his first American mission at St. Mary's church in Waddington from January 1848 to June 1849..."

I have found an online book which consists completely of engravings of Irish-born men who resided in Troy NY, with no text
or explanation of them in any way. None are the ones listed as Clare-born in Troy cemeteries. Nonetheless if you recognize
a listed name as being your ancestor, email me this week at smc.clare@gmail.com so that I can take a screen shot of the
book page with his image and send that directly. After Dec. 20th, I will not have access to the software program to do a
screen shot, so it will likely be useless to contact me after that date.

The names were taken from the book "Representative Young Irish Americans of Troy, NY".

The link to the names and profiles, from the Troy NY Irish Genealogy Society. Click on the names for the profile for each. My Uncle James P. Hooley included in the list. Tim Hooley

Thanks very much to alerting us to the full version of the book on the gen. society website. Your James Hooley was born
in a CT town that I had never heard of (I lived in CT for 6 years) so I tried Mapquest, which listed a Port Chester Harbor in
CT but which showed on its map only Port Chester in NY within a quarter or half mile of Fairfield County CT. Perhaps there
was a state line change at one point.

It is interesting that your family left the metro NYC area for better opportunities in Troy, upstate (contra the trend more recently that NYC is the mecca of opportunity). Nonetheless your James set out a fine example of progressiveness for his family and his society. Any remaining evidence of musical ability in your family ?

Troy NY during the 19th century was the 6th largest city in the USA a highly industrialized area, and Iron capital of the USA rivaling Pittsburgh and also Stove capital of the world.

The Irish flocked to Troy for work as Iron Moulders in the many foundries or in the many mills as Troy was also known as the "collar city".

The Port Chester Ct. listed as the location of the birth place of my Uncle James is a mystery I have been unable to solve.

My Gr Great Grandfather relocated the family from Troy in 1850 to Spuyten Duvil, NY near the Bronx moving back to Troy in 1865. Thanks, Tim Hooley
