NIAH website: houses of Clare, aerial photography

Post by Paddy Casey » Sat Oct 11, 2008 6:16 pm

The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) is a state initiative under the administration of the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government and established on a statutory basis under the provisions of the Architectural Heritage (National Inventory) and Historic Monuments (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1999.

The purpose of the NIAH is to identify, record, and evaluate the post-1700 architectural heritage of Ireland, uniformly and consistently as an aid in the protection and conservation of the built heritage. NIAH surveys provide the basis for the recommendations of the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government to the planning authorities for the inclusion of particular structures in their Record of Protected Structures (RPS).

The published surveys are a source of information on the selected structures for relevant planning authorities. They are also a research and educational resource.

The website at http://www.buildingsofireland.ie/cgi-bi ... i?county=3 contains a long list of historic Clare houses with their map references, map images (not as good as those on the Clare Library site, but you can't have everything - and - this is the surprise bonus - aerial photos of the locations of the houses. The photos are of fairly high resolution. In fact, by cruising from house to house on this site you can see quite a lot of Clare from the air.

The material includes, for example, an excellent aerial photo of the historic New Park House, the present-day seat of Declan Barron, leading Clare genealogist, hotelier and gourmet chef.

Thank you for this info, Paddy. We've added a link to the NIAH from our Archaeology page, and we’ll be adding individual links from individual pages in that section to individual pages of the NIAH. The aerial photos (combined with the maps) are really useful. Clare Admin
