Harvard U. opens digital collections

Post by smcarberry » Thu Sep 18, 2008 1:13 pm

There are some interesting parts of the new Harvard University Open Collections website, for Irish matters (just use Ireland
as the keyword). I think I also remember something on medical matters, too, which can be reached by advancing up the
organizational links from the one provided below.

The photos of rural cottages are striking.

An absolute goldmine, Sharon. Thank you very much indeed. I'm wallowing in it.

Today I tried a Google search using "digital collections +history" and found my way onto the Yale University site. Yale has its finding aids online but not the actual documents. Although it is a rarity for a family historian to reach records of a social organization unless they are published in book form, here are some worth pursuing in the Yale collection:

Guide to the Religious and Benevolent Societies and Organizations Collection (Record Group No. 34)
http://webtext.library.yale.edu/divifla ... 34-D-G.htm

Irish Society for Promoting the Scriptural Education and Religious Instruction of Irish Roman Catholics
Place of Publication: Dublin
Dates: 1859

Knights of Columbus
Place of Publication: Davenport, Iowa
Dates: 1916
Box: 35

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Place of Publication: New York, Toronto, Mexico
Dates: 1848-1884

Then I explored publications for which online subscriptions can be purchased (there are medical ones also) and saw this one:
Irish Studies Review
ISSN: 1469-9303 (electronic) 0967-0882 (paper)
Publication Frequency: 4 issues per year
Subject: European Studies
Publisher: Routledge

The Yale website states that there are related journals listed under these headings:
Contemporary British History
Culture and Religion
Ethics, Place and Environment
European Review of History
Folklore
History and Anthropology
Journal of Contemporary European Studies
Social History

However, the big gift of the day came from following a few links to a British Irish studies organization and its resources page which provides more than enough to explore for many days to come:

Enjoy !
