The faces of Clare-born in New Zealand

Post by smcarberry » Fri May 15, 2009 12:43 pm

The University of Wellington has played a role in placing online old texts
with descriptions of New Zealand pioneers, many with photographs and several with a Clare connection. Below is a selection of what the provided search engine can bring up for Clare-born.

I can upload a maximum of three photos here, so there will be a "reply" with the other three.

This old message has just been brought to my attention - I don't know how I missed it.

The NZetc website seems to be broken tonight; I cannot get beyond
http://www.nzetc.org/tm/scholarly/tei-Cyc03Cycl.html

I suspect that the James Frost and Michael Frost mentioned above are the sons of Patrick Frost and Margaret Hogan of Rossmanagher; their sons James and Michael certainly emigrated to the antipodes, if that is the appropriate collective term for Australia and New Zealand. Their baptisms can be found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... ecords.htm

The ages in the Cyclopedia are a little out - James chr. (as Jacobus) in 1832, b. 1840; Michael chr. 1839, b.1850.

I have a copy of a letter, deposited in the Clare County Library by their grandnephew, written by James from Maheno on 29 Jun 1876.

According to Google maps, Maheno is 58.9km along the coast south of Studholme.

The youngest Frost brother, Thomas, lived in Sixmilebridge, where he married Margaret Kett, sister of my GGgrandmother. James Frost's 1876 Maheno letter (or possibly a separate undated letter now attached to it) says:

`you let my brother Thomass and his wife Margaret that I have met her brothers Michi John and James sum years ago. I did not her from thim leatley.'

I would love to learn what became of Michael, John and James Kett after they went to the antipodes.

Here a site to keep your eyes on if you are in need of New Zealand family data, as it appears ready to continue expanding its online materials. Currently there is an easily-searched Dictionary of New Zealand Biography, which has several Clare-born written up in descriptions of residents, most with photographs. The only overlap with the prior posting is the biography of George O'Brien.

Here is the main link: http://www.teara.govt.nz/en

From the Dictionary, here are biographies of individuals and links to their pages:
