Reybauld family query

Post by casey_june » Tue Jan 10, 2012 6:49 pm

Hi all,

We've been doing research into a branch of our family tree, and are seeking any help and guidance which might be offered.

The name is 'Reybauld', though there are numerous spellings, such as 'Reaball' and 'Ribald'.

The earliest member we have located is a William Reybauld (I), married to Catherine Darcy. We found him through the baptism records of his children (Ellen, John, Patrick, Mary and William) in the Ennis Parish Records, between 1845 and 1855. We have not been able to locate either a birth or death record for William.

William Reybauld (II) was born in Ennis in 1848 and married a Margaret Ford. Their children, listed in the Ennish Parish Records are Pat, John, Joseph, Mary Anne (known as Minnie), Alfred William, Peter, Michael (died at birth), Ellen, Michael, James and Bridget.

Bridget married into the Casey family, and is our link to the Reybaulds.

We're curious as to the origins of the family. We've seen the name 'Raybould' in the 1901 and 1911 census, but these families are English and only arrived in Ireland in the late 19th Century. The Reybaulds of Clare/Limerick are the only citation of the name in Ireland.

Kevin Casey, Bridget's son, believed that the family had Jewish Origins, and began in Ireland from a single immigrant of (possibly Eastern-) European origins. With this in mind we are pursuing two possible lines of enquiry:

1- We suspect that the Reybaulds are linked to the 'Riboldi' family, who arrived in Limerick from Milan, Italy - via Cork - at the beginning of the 19th Century. Both Reybauld and Riboldi resemble 'Reiboldt', which is a Hebrew name. We have seen in records of Jewish cemeteries in Poland that the name is sometimes spelled 'Reibold' or 'Rybolt'.

2- Another option is that the Reybaulds may descend from Palatine Germans. Records show that families with the surnames 'Rabold', 'Rabholtz', 'Reibold' and 'Reiboldt' left Germany, but we can't find these names in lists of Palatines who settled in Ireland.

We're very eager to discover something about William (I) and hopefully solve the mystery of where the family came from. If anyone could help us locate a birth record, obituary etc. etc. which might list his parents' names, we'd be extremely grateful.

Any other information about the family which anyone may be able to offer would also be most welcome.

Attached is a document listing the information we know about the family thus far.

Many thanks!!

June Casey

Hi June,

The following short newspaper article might be of some interest.

Polycarp

"Clare Freeman"

18 March 1865

On Thursday last, the body of a woman named Bridget Riebalt was found floating in the river near Clonroad Bridge. This woman has been missing for several weeks past. She had been a servant in the house of Mr Ryall of this town [Ennis], and one evening about a month since she went out of the house in a state of drunkenness in the absence of the family, and was not heard of since until her body was discovered this week. An inquest was held yesterday on the remains before Mr John Cullinan, coroner, when the jury returned the following verdict - "Found drowned in the river at Ennis on the 16th March 1865, and we have no evidence to say how she came there, but we believe it was either accidental or voluntary".

Hi June - you might also like to check the Hugenot names - a list of those buried in Dublin as in this link. As you can see there are 2 names which may have morphed into Reybauld. I have Dublin Catholic ancestors who married Hugenot-background families.

Good luck, Kerry
