Freeman's Journal 16 Jul 1862
“Thursday, the steamship City of Washington...of the Liverpool, New York, and Philadelphia (Inman) Line...embarked from Queenstown fourteen cabin and two hundred forty-eight steerage passengers... making in all five hundred and ninety-eight passengers and crew. The class of emigrants were from the rural districts of Ireland, consisting mostly of families of small farmers and agricultural laborers and servants, principally from the counties of Limerick and Clare...”
