House of Morty Carroll attacked by Pinders of Tiermaclane

Post by Peter Carroll » Fri Aug 01, 2008 11:27 pm

The following is an extract from the Clare Journal and Ennis Advertiser of Monday, May 31st, 1847:

On the night of the 29th instant, about the hour of one o’clock, a party of about eight men, three of whom were observed to have guns, attacked the house of Morty Carroll, of Buncraggy, and after breaking the windows and door with stones, five of them entered and demanded fire-arms and money, and fired a shot inside. They did not succeed in procuring arms, although Carroll had a gun which his son armed himself with and refused to surrender. Carroll’s son repaired to the police at Clare, who turned out, and three men, named Pinder, of Tiermaclane, have been fully identified, and committed to trial by Capt. Leyre R.M

(A Murty Carroll appears in the Tithe Applotment book of the 22nd of July 1826 as an occupier of land in Buncraggy.)
