Old Ireland News - a cornucopia of Clare items

Post by Paddy Casey » Sun Jul 20, 2008 7:44 am

The Old Ireland News website ( http://www.irelandoldnews.com/ ) has been around for a long time - around 8 years, I think - and is easily picked up by modern search engines. However, I thought it important to flag it here because it is an absolute cornucopia of newspaper cuttings related to County Clare. One could spend weeks browsing in it without losing interest. It is jammed-packed-full of names of Clare people and places and reports of Clare events and has a convenient - and, as far as I can ascertain, effective - search box on the home page.

The old newspapers from which the items are taken include the Clare Advertiser, Kilrush, 1868-1888; Clare Freeman & Ennis Gazette, Ennis, 1853-1884; Clare Independent & Tipperary Catholic Times, (1881 became Independent and Munster Advertiser), Ennis, 1876-1885; Clare Journal & Ennis Advertiser, Ennis, 1807-1917; Ennis Chronicle, Ennis, 1789-1831; and the Kilrush Herald & Kilkee Gazette, Kilrush, 1874-1922. The Clare Champion, Ennis (1903-current) also features.

Many (most ?) of the Clare items were contributed by the prominent Clare genealogist, local historian, hotelier, gourmet chef and man-with-his-ear-to-the-ground Declan Barron. He contributed at least 199 of them. Curiously, his name does not figure in the list of contributors ( http://www.irelandoldnews.com/contributors.html ).

So, cancel everything for the next 3 weeks and sift through those Clare nuggets on the Old Ireland News website. You won't regret it.

Paddy
