Proselytism in Clare Kilbaha 1851

Post by moc66 » Fri Jun 27, 2008 8:47 pm

Hi
In reference to Corofin Biblical School in the 1830's, proselytism came later to Kilbaha after the Famine in 1850's. Using the situation of the time when people's morale was low and they were struggling to come to terms with aftermath of the Famine. In a letter to The freeman's Journal September 29th 1851 Fr Michael Meehan parish priest of Carrigaholt and Cross outlines how a Rev Griffin on holidays turned up outside Cross Church admonishing his parishioners to change their faith. Also in the letter he tells of Marcus and Henry Keane trying to influence how religion was taught in the school in Kilbaha. The outcome of this was that Fr Meehan felt that a church was needed in Kilbaha to counteract the proselytizer’s influence in the Kilbaha area of the parish. This link will lead you to a brief account of the Story of The Little Ark, http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... ilbaha.htm . Other reading material is available from the Church in Kilbaha and also from this website http://www.loopheadclare.com/index.html. Attached here is the letter from Fr Meehan.
