This newspaper article (The Belfast News-Letter (Belfast, Ireland), Friday, August 8, 1828) gives a brief but interesting account of a son of Clare, Pat Lynch, who started life under restricted circumstances but then became learned in the Classics and worked his way up in the academic world. He was educated near Ennis by Donough an Charrain. Because the latter knew no English, Lynch learned the Classics through the Irish language. He became secretary to the Gaelic Society of Dublin and before his death was employed in a geographical and statistical history of Ireland.
