This report from the Examiner (London, England), Sunday, June 5, 1825 tells a tragic story of police brutality at Ennistymon fair which, if it is true, suggests that the police were used to abusing the population with impunity. A sub-constable named Edward Tarlton shot a pregnant woman with, it seems, no remorse. Sergeant Wood swiped at a cobbler named Guttery with a sword. Tarlton was ordered to stand trial at the Assizes.
The use of the word spirit in italics insinuates that the chief of police was drunk.
