Lackaroongary

Post by olebouch » Tue Aug 23, 2011 8:37 pm

Lackaroongary is in Gortavrulla, just north of Feakle. What part of Gortavrulla is Lackaroongary? Can any of you Irish speakers tell me what Lackaroongary or Gortavrulla mean?

http://www.logainm.ie/Viewer.aspx?text= ... treets=yes gives the original form of the townland name as
gort an Bhrollaigh.

Gort means field
brollach (genitive bhrollaigh) means bosom or breast or preface, but in this case is more likely a personal name (from which, according to de Bhulbh, the surname Brolly derives).

Not being an official townland name, Lackaroongary is not listed at logainm.ie
It sounds like leath ceathrú an garraí or the half quarter of the garden.
In this context, quarter is an ancient unit of land more or less equivalent to the townland.
